ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

    Burn oil

alright I got an 90 accord with 105k which is not bad. Problem is it burns oil. Not alot I would say I have to buy an extra bottle when I do my oil change. I want to know how do find out if its your HEAD or the BLOCK. I don't smell oil in my exhaust. I have no smoke. The car pulls fine no Check engine light. The car idles great. thanks for the help!!

Do a compression test. If the cylinder is reading low compression then squirt a little oil into the cylinder and retest. After oiling and the compression goes up then its your rings that are leaking and the oil you added temporarily sealed them up. If it stays the same then its the head.

Its probably your valve guides and seals.

X2 - No smoke, only a quart every 3000 miles, only 105k miles on it? I'd look for a leak, a small leak. with low mileage, chances are there isn't enough wear for it to be consumed internally, plus it probably sat for an extended period of it's life, letting some seals or gaskets dry out and crack. Slide a piece of cardboard underneath the engine next time you park and check it for stains th e next morning.

yeh sounds like a slow leak, however if u want to know u can definately run the compression/wet compression test like doughnut said, that will give u a basic idea of whats going on

1 bottle between oil changes is perfectly normal. when i had my H22, it burned way more than that when it was brand new. i complained to the dealer enough times but oil burning is very normal for hondas. i haven't seen or owned any that didn't burn at least that much. plus they'll burn ALOT more of you drive it hard.

FYI - the SAE spec is 1L between oil changes 5000kms/3 months.

                  I wish people wouldn't x2... it's absolutely worthless!

However, I must say... I was impressed by that response. That was a better answer than I could've given, and I actually learned something there It's rare that I learn a new trick!

And I agree with those that say it's likely to be a leak, not burning. If there's no smoke at ANY time, it's unlikely that it's burning oil. Have someone follow you and look for smoke when driving, especially at full throttle.

Get some good engine degreaser, and clean the engine really well. After driving for a while, check for signs of leaks. Some of the most common leak areas aren't easily seen.

                      Response

                      Now now deevergote...lol

In my opinion...x2 is completey Ok, then again its not my site....lol

I would think, especially when clicking QUOTE to someone's post... it's a very good way to show you completely agree with what the person just posted, entirely. It's not very ofter a person COMPLETELY agrees with what someone posts, right? It also shows the strength & validity of a post to have someone back you.

                      ANYHOO...

I hate to disagree with the whole....you have a leak and side with normal oil burning in the motor...but having owned 3 previous Honda's, all different models....and being an apprentice mechanic... being down a liter of oil after 3000 miles is completely normal after 90-120,000 miles or 150-200,000 km's if you drive somewhat aggresively and shift in the high rpm's. Its just a habit we need to have to keep checking the level.

If it's a daily driver and you go * putt* *putt* all day then yes...being low on oil is very odd.

I have a 93 F22A6 and when I put my SRI on...holy cow...I had a heavy foot that month let me tell you. I changed to matting it to 5-5500 rpm, 4-5x a day in 3 gears just to hear it suck that air and rev high. I went through 3 liters of oil in just over 2 months just because of my shifting and rev'ing.

Now that isnt everyday obviously. I went back to normal driving and the engines fine.

I've never known an engine "leak" to reduce the oil level. Even with a bad seal on the drain plug it won't go that low. Leaks around the oil pan and distributor happen alot but don't let THAT much out. It's more a cosmetic pain in the rear.

1 lil comment but dont rip my head off any of you.....goto synthetic or use an oil additive.

Annnnd here's where we all fight over synthetic and oil additives....LMAO

                      I'm out.

IF it's burning oil and the engine has a lot of miles, run some 10W30 and add a bit of Lucas oil additive to help reduce oil burning.

Since putting on the SRI/H23 upper manifold on the A6, I have been stomping that gas pedal quite agressively to just hear the engine. This car is loud now!

x2 is a way of post whoring... unfair to the other members, and more work for me. It's also useless, as it offers no worthwhile help. If one person gives me a good answer, I don't need 10 other people agreeing with them.

Yes, it shows they agree... but it DOES happen VERY often. I delete most of them. Of course, this new software requires me to enter my complicated password EVERY time, so it gets irritating.

If you agree with someone, then you agree. If you have something to add, add something. If you HAVE to post, at least say "I agree" and restate the idea in your own words. Then at least it looks as if you're using your noodle just a little bit!

A leak can reduce the oil level... I'm dealing with that right now in my Grand Prix... 1-2 quarts a day (I drive 300 miles a day). It's a pretty bad leak, though. Getting fixed on Monday (yay for recalls!) of course, a lead of that magnitude would be obvious. The street in front of my house is a mess.

I agree that if you get on the gas frequently, an older engine WILL burn oil. It's a sign of things wearing out, but nothing to worry about right away. Not until it starts doing it while you're driving conservatively... then the problem is getting bad. (see, I agreed with you... and restated noodle!)

Oil additives aren't a long-term fix, and aren't recommended by ANY manufacturer. It can help, but it doesn't fix the problem... just hides it for a while.

Ok I see your point now. People could take advantage of x2.

and GOOD GOD...1-2 quarts a day !!!...thats unreal.

Nice Pontiac...time to get a Acura TL ?...lol

Ya and I meant IF....IF...you don't see any visible oil leaking then its just normal oil burn.

                              I can't imagine what your drive-way looks like...lol

..and stop talking about my noodle.... I'm very sensative about it.
