    HELP! Brakes/Rotors? Squealing/Squeaking

So today was the first day this started happening. I pulled out of my driveway and as my car started to roll on its own I heard this really loud squeaking noise coming from the front driver's side wheel. It sounds like metal to metal rubbing against each other. For about the first quarter to half mile the noise continued.

The thing is when the car was rolling and when I accelerated, the squealing continued but when i tapped on the brakes or was using the brakes it was very quiet. After I got out of my neighborhood the car sounded fine until I started to drive again after class for another quarter-half mile.

I tried searching for anyone with the same problems but only found a few things. I'm pretty new with the mechanical work so bear with me please.

Could the problem be the brake pads? rotors? bearing? Any help would be appreciated.

    Sounds like the brake pads.
They have a metal warning clip on them to let you know they are getting excessively low. Take the pads out, inspect them and replace them if necessary

also check your rotor depending on how long its been like that, it could've dug a groove into your rotors.

so the car has been sitting for a few days. just checked the brake pads and rotors. pads still have plenty of life left, rotor is still smooth.

the car still squeaks on a roll and acceleration, quiet when braking. still need help

thats actually about 30% left, its suppsoed to be a 1/2" thick when new. id recommend changing them or ditching the shim if you dont want it to be squeking an cant afford the new brake pads.

or what you could do is take out your slide pins and grease them up. If the other pad doesn't look even to the one pictured, your caliper could be sticking. That might help w/ the squeaking while driving issue, b/c what I'm thinking is going on is the calipers isn't retracting 100% when you let off the brake so the pad could be lightly dragging on the rotor.

noise is emitted because of vibration. you may need to break the pads in aka hard stops.

(some) people are not reading carefully. The noise happens when the brake pedal is not depressed and the car is rolling.

ok, i don't know what your car's problem is but I am having a similar issue with my car and someone mentioned a "backing plate" which I actually don't know yet what it is. clearly it's a "metal on metal"type sound that you are describing. Mine happens when I turn the wheel to the right while driving, and stops when I turn it to the left. Also, it only happens it the car has been sitting for a couple days, then I drive it. And it's not that related to brake application.

It is possible that a sticking caliper could have something to do with it, b but find out what a "backing plate" means and see if it could relate to your problem.

a plausible theory for the squealing sound after the car is parked.

The fact that the noise doesn't happen when the brakes are applied points to towards a brake related issue, probably a pad dragging.

here's a likely scenario. one or both of the pads is not coming easily completely free of the rotor after you use the brakes HARD, like coming to a complete stop and parking. That solves the mystery of why it should happen after your car is parked, which is counterintuitive because you think "well my brakes aren't on when I park--at least my front ones aren't" But in fact you do brake hard in order to park, and it is that last braking action that is setting up the dragging of the pad/pads, which will create a vibration in the pads and rotors and hence a squeal.

When you get back in the car, you get the sound again because it takes a while for regular braking action to release whatever is holding that pad against the rotor. Someone mentioned slide pins, it could also be a sticking caliper piston that only sticks on the part of its range that is used an hard, complete braking.

problem solved, the inner pads were wearing uneven with the outer pads and the metal clip on the back was slightly touching the rotor. the sound only came when the rotor was in a certain spot on the rotation. I had the pads replaced and the rotors resurfaced already so everything is good now. Thanks for everyones input!
