    F20A4 engine tuning plans

    Hello from Slovenia!

    I drive a 5th gen honda prelude with a SOHC non-Vtec engine (code:F20A4)

And i plan on upgrading it with some goodies...

So here is the plan and questions:
-Port and polish the head Q= anything special to watch out for?

    -3angle valve job

-H23 intake manifold, port matched and polished Q=Taper the TB or leave standard?

-Custom exhaust manifold by a company in slovenia that makes motorcycle exhausts

-milling the head by 0.03" Q= is that overkill or still safe?

-f22 parts single valve springs and titanium retainers Q= any other recomendations?

-bisimoto stage 2 cam regrind Q= is the F20A4 cam the same as F22A series engines, and will a F22A stage 2 regrind be ok for my engine?

-OBD1 ECU and tune on a dyno Q= maybe another option?

-new gaskets all around, and new oil and water pump

Thank you for all your time and answers!

Here is a pic of the car so you can see the redness without power

But a f20b dohc vtec in it. That or that h23 dohc vtec. Both are obd2 so you don't have to worry about anything.

You seem to have a very good plan so far. You definitely did your homework!

The F20A head SHOULD be the same as the F22A head... but since your car is a 5th gen, it may be different. I didn't even know that the 5th gen Prelude got anything other than an H22A!

                    The F20A, if it's basically a 2.0L F22A, has plenty of potential.

For the port and polish, you'll want to be sure to have it done by someone that knows what they're doing. Preferably someone that has worked on F series Honda heads in the past (which, unfortunately, isn't all that easy). It might be worth your money to send it to a shop here in the US, since there are a few that have done very well (Bisimoto and HondaFan81 are the ones to talk to about those shops).

I would taper the throttle body... but only after installing the H23 manifold and making sure it's not detrimental to your setup. It's good for the F22A, but it may be too much for the F20A. I wouldn't think so, but don't sink too much money into it without trying things out... it might really make your low end soggy!

Milling the head... check your clearances. Make sure you won't be risking valve/piston contact. ESPECIALLY after having work done... you don't want to ruin an expensive head!

For tuning, a dyno is best... but a street tune can be done. Either way, you'll need a knowlegdeable tuner, or you'll need to learn yourself.

Yes, people have a hard time beliving that the 5th gen also came with 137hp

The headwork will be done by a tuner that has alot of experience with honda engines, he worked on all sorts of enginec, except the F20A... But i spoke to him and he said to drop the head off at his place, and he will study it a bit, to see what can be done... As for the dyno tuning, we also have a very good honda tuner here in Slovenia, so im going with hondata S200 and OBD1 combo... I allready set my goals, somewhere in the range of 140-160whp would be very very nice, i dont want to swap over for the H22, just because i love this engine, it just has a good feeling to it, doesent burn ANY oil, and i have about 80k miles on it... So for now i will be leaving the bottom end intact, we are just going to take it apart and clean everything that needs cleaning. As for the intake manifold, im probably going to try different combos, i have to H22 manifolds and one H23 that i got for free or really cheap, so ill be trying it with double gutted IABs, single IABs and no IABs at all... The bottom end will also be balanced because the fuel cut is at 6800RPMs now, and i want to rev it to 7k....

                      Thank you for the answers!

Man, that is SO weird seeing that SOHC in a 5th gen! It's OBD2, I assume? Also weird to see!

The exhaust ports are O_O_O_O like the F22A? From the picture, it looks just like an F22A.

Does the guy doing your headwork have a flow bench? That will significantly increase the effectiveness of his work. Your horsepower goals are reasonable... your plans should get you there. HondaFan81 managed to get about 150whp with just headwork on an F22A with a mild cam.

If you're taking the bottom end apart to balance it, you should put out a little more money and beef up the internals a bit. You probably won't risk much by revving to 7k, but it'd be nice to have stronger guts anyway! You could always bump the compression as well. Still, only 80k on that bottom end... I suppose it'd be a waste to discard such young internals! That engine is a baby!

You car practically looks brand new. Even with the fairly weak engine, I'd love to have that!

Honestly, it is going to be hard to get really firm answers since 95% of the members here are in North America where that generation Prelude only came with the H22.

It does look, from that picture, to have a identical design to the F22A engines found in our cars. You did come to the right place though because of any other resource this one has to have the most information on all single cam F series engines.

But again, since your platform is so different and the F20A4 is actually an engine code I have not heard of, all of the information provided here may not be 100% correct in your case.

But as with everything there is no way to find out better than just taking it apart and see what works.

                          Good luck to you!

Thank you for all of the answers and support!
In a couple of days ill be taking apart a F20A4 (i have 2 more with 100k miles) and I will post up some pictures of the guts so that you can see what it looks like on the inside... The exhaust ports are O_O_O_O! It is OBD2 with a single O2 sensor... The headwork guy has a flow bench, and he is going to port and polish and also mill the head, but im not sure about milling it more then the honda specs... So when i start taking the engine apart ill post up some pics for you to see and maybe i can get some 100% answers then

Thanks for the compliments on the car and all the help guys!

Milling isn't really a great idea. If you want to raise the compression a bit, do so with the pistons. If you mill the head, and then do something bad like blow a head gasket, you'll probably render the head useless. You can only mill so far.
