ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

Read them. You will be expected to follow them.

    R-12 to R-134

how much does it cost to convert the a/c and what does it take to do it?

    #2
you can run both in your car, just make sure most of it is R12 if not I think you would just need a new dryer and compressor so I would say under 450.

Whatever you do, DO NOT mix R12 and R134, bad shizzle happens.

Have the current refrigerant vacuumed out by a shop (should be very cheap) and then buy a DIY conversion kit. It's easy to do, and you can buy them at any auto parts store or even Wal-Mart.

few shops offer r12 recharge, at the dealership I was at we only did it if you didn't have leaks.

The retro can involve just a vacuum and refill along with the addition of two new ports.

In such a case you only will need...the ports, the vacuum and the r-134 refrig.

However it usually involves a new line...I think the high press. line, but I'm not sure.

In this case you add the above and also add a receiver drier. Your compressor should be fine.

THe first one isn't as expensive...the second is an ass raping.

Hey I am looking at doing this too... it seems that hondas from 90 on dont need new evaporators or compressors. We just need to evacuate the R-12 out and swap out the ports and put some ester oil in and then fill it with r-134a. I am going to do it this week so wish me luck too!

I know some cars don't need the new lines...just the ports (which just pop on and you might could get at parts stores) and new refridge...but be prepared.

I just realized with the new ports...you have to take the valves out of the old ports and then put the new ones on...so yeah...new drier.

you might could get away with not getting a new drier, but a mechanic will tell you to install a new drier. You might could get away with it if you didn't have it open for long but it would be best to put on a new drier.

Think about how long the system will be open while the ports are put on...and how long it takes to put in a new drier...seems to me the ports take less time...I would try without a new drier but the mech. doing it might not go for it...being an old part and all.

why bother taking it to a mechanic? Just get the $30 kit and do it yourself.

You need it sucked out if you want it to last and run good.

If the car has no current charge, do it that way. Other wise, have it vacuumed out by a shop so you don't release all the refrigerant into the atmosphere.

why would a mechanic care about the ports or the drier if you just want them to evacuate the a/c?

Anyone here ever heard of someone using Propane to charge their AC?
