ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

    Blown Head Gasket Question

Ok any replys will be appreciated. My son has a 1990 Accord with a blown head gasket. I am old school and built a number of Chevy V8's back in the day. Just never worked on anything with overhead cams - just your regular type V8 pushrod motors. My question is - i am going to help him replace the head gasket and i need to know if there is anything special i need to know - or just follow the procedures in the manual.

Any special tools needed? Any specific procedures that need to be followed?

    Any replies will be apprecaited.

    Thanks

The haynes manual taught me how to take an entire motor apart and put it back together

leung and wed are absolutly right. when doing the head the smart thing to do is get it resurfaced and with the seals thing your head gasket set will come with every seal youll need to replace it also comes with valve spring retainer gaskets, on that note you might have to spend a little more money but id take the head to a good engine machinist or a good mechanic and let them replace those to be safe and to do it the right and smart way. what i would say is the most important thing about doing a head job on cb7's (90-93 accords) or any thats close interferance is the timing. make sure and make sure again its right, theres a small area for play but if you dont get it right your valves will bend like nothing and all that work is down the drain. also on the head bolts and the cam cap bolts be carefull when you go to put it back together, being in that head for what 17 years has made them a little fragile. not to scare you with any of that but doing a head job on a cb7 or any honda is very simple if you take your time and do it right. hope i could help.

            good luck

If the engine was overheated, the head may be warped. Definitely take it to a machine shop to make sure it's not too warped to be repaired. A resurfacing, as suggested, will be a good idea.

The manual should be all you need, since you're already familiar with engines in general. I'm the exact opposite... I just bought a Grand Prix GTP, and the pushrod V6 is so foreign to me!

Anyway, be sure to follow the proper pattern when removing the head bolts, or you'll most certainly warp it. When reassembling the engine, just be sure all timing marks are where they should be... of course, this should be familiar ground anyway... just a slighly different application.

                same!

at work, thats all i see. i remember the first week at work, "What the hell is this...?"

                "...A pushrod"

                "And this?"

                "A lifter."

The only real difference with OHC is that you'll be removing the timing belt and the cam with the head to do the gasket, whereas you'd leave the cam alone on a pushrod motor.
