The best way to sell a car with a not-so-reliable reputation is to put a reliable engine in the car! GM did it with Toyota engines, and now Honda engines. Ford does it with Mazda stuff. Make it known that the "cheap and reliable" Japanese companies are supplying the parts, and there you go... instant sales. Many American companies don't have the best rep for producing reliable low-end cars. You don't see many US engineered/manufactured old compacts around these days, but you can still see an 84 Civic or Corolla on the road... and not being driven by enthusiasts.
As for my VTEC/Ecotec comparison, I know they're not the same... it was just a joke, since we were saying that GM is secretly powering their cars with Honda engines.
GM's current 2.4L Ecotec is quickly being recognized as an excellent engine for modifications. I would actually consider a Cobalt SS myself... I didn't know about the FIAT roots though. That's interesting.
