The way I've been looking at it (maybe trying to justify the cost to myself), is that I'm trying to match the power of a stock Evo/STi without the boost. Those cars, used, go for prices in the mid-teens to low 20s. I could just buy one of those, but odds are it was beaten on by the previous owners, and turbo cars often aren't looked after properly. Plus, the Subaru's interior is crap. With my project, I get the utility of a wagon (I get a lot of use out of my RSX's massive hatch, so I'd love even more hauling space) and a car that I'm not really going to see modified often, if at all, in my area (I see several mud-flapped WRXs/STis a day, and Evos are much more common than even my RSX around here).
Modifying cars is a super expensive hobby but if you know that you love cars, I see two options: either get a car that has the performance you want right out of the box (which is most likely something newer and more expensive), or find something cheap that you enjoy looking at and spend the same money making it perform the way you want.
