Hey Alex, when you get BARd, what the best place to put it and how do you protect that from the elements? I'd hate to go through all the trouble of ref'ing & making your swap legit, just to have it get ruined...

I bared my H22 obd1 engine with a jdm p13 ecu. It had an automatic boya transmission with the stock accord tcu. I was sure that I was going to have to do a 5 speed swap but I didn't. The ref was more worried about the emissions part of the test and making sure that my intake manifold and sensors matched up to the 93 H22 prelude components.

Wow very interesting... I want to know that BAR shop. They seem hella cool. I would seriously put my car back to stock and drive it down there coz all the BAR ref's in my area or in sac are haters with their own fixed up rides or Muscle heads who don't know anything about how Hondas are setup with a swapped engine. The sacramento BAR ref failed me instantly because my engine bay didn't "look like a prelude" with the charcoal boxes. I argued with him and wanted to just take my car back but I stayed to see what other bs he was going to find wrong.

If you took a wire tucked car to one of these shops, that would be a guaranteed instant visual inspection fail.

The one in Sac off of Florin road made me take off the black box cover and have the map sensor and everything else inside exposed. He even gave me a diagram of how it should look. He was a nice guy. I went back a week later and she was bared.

I smog my girlfriends 92 prelude that had an H23A swap and it pass with flying colors =) that's right JDM swap pass smog in CA no problems no BARD none of that crap needed.

the guy set he would smog my H22A on my accord as well no problems he set it should pass nothing to worry about how cool is that.

Oh, no one is saying that it can't pass smog, but if you get pulled over by California's Nazi State traffic cops, and they ticket you for everything, you will have your car impounded for an illegal swap because you didn't get it BAR'd, then they will ask you for the info on the smog shop that passed it on emissions tests without a BAR certification .

Yes, they will impound your vehicle for illegal modifications, due to it being deemed "Unworthy for road use".

My old 1974 Vega had its old 4 cyl engine swapped out for a 305 V8 from a 1976 Monza and the referee station took one look at it and passed it right away

the Chevrolet Vega never came from the factory with a V8

so anything is possible

so nice that NY is past emissions testing on 90-91 Accords and Civics, just safety only now

Cops and the state referee are two different entities. A cop can assume you have modified emissions if he/she identifies aftermarket accessories learned from the drag net classes. A smog ref is a state official and verifies your car passes emissions both visually and on the rollers. Biggest difference is a police officer doesn't makes a decision based on your car and your attitude, where as the smog referree is out there to help you and assist in making your vehicle legal for road use. California has always has been strict with emissions, and the mobile smog checks have been around for awhile now.
