tell your teacher he's a moron (actually dont, unless you dont need a good grade). i beat a mustang, albeit a v6 auto, with my incredibly stock f22 and 100lbs of fiberglass, mdf and subs in the trunk.

not only do they have solid rear axles (crappy, lazy design) their v8's are an incredibly unsophisticated design. pushrods in an engine built in thelast decade? seriously, ford needs to freaking get with it. i'll admit, the cobras are pretty badass, but they had 4-wheel independent suspension and overhead cams. also, the current model is the first full re-design since the sixties!

V6's can be beat by about anything.
Most RWD domestics run solid axle

There hasn't been a V8 pushrod Mustang built since 1995...

Also, live rear axles are good for drag racing, because they are EXTREMELY durable compared to CV equipped half shafts.

And you are incorrect in your time frame. The Fox body Mustang originally debuted on the Ford Fairmont platform in 1978, but it is untruthful to assume that it was never updated. The last of the squareish Mustangs (1998-2003) were so different from the original fox body, they aren't even considered to be the same platform in most regards. Also, one of the main disadvantages of this platform is the FWD like weight distribution (about 60%F/40%R).

As far as stock for stock, they really aren't that fast, I keep up with the GT's in my H22. Still, they sound great, look good, and are fun cars to drive. The aren't that sophisticated, and they really aren't handling monsters, but it doesn't take much to make them severely angry in a straight line.

Honestly, if your shop teacher can't see the good attributes of imports, he is just an ignorant douche and will never be otherwise, so don't waste your time. Most people like that, don't care for imports until they get their ass schooled by one. And then they usually won't admit they respect them.

On the whole import vs. domestic thing...I have a victory. My girl has sworn that her next car will be a Honda after having her Buick break down 3 times this week, everytime with a different problem. Up until this point, she was just getting sick of me telling her how imports are more reliable.
