Static/Crackling Sound from stereo - any advice good

Hey Guys - I got a 91 EXR wagon and replaced the stock stereo with Alpine all around. The HU is CDA-9886, 6.5" Type R in doors, 4" Type S in rear roof and the single 6X9 Type R in the cargo area. There's a strange crackling and/or static sound when greater than 50% power like its getting distorted already. Seems like this shouldn't be happening with decent HU and speakers? The crackling comes from all the speakers. Here's some weird things i thought it might be:

    1. The single 6X9 in the cargo area - this had two sets of wires coming to the old speaker (i searched on this and originally it was a dual voice coil subwoofer) so i tied the 2 positives together, tied the 2 negatives together and then connected the speaker to the new single connection. I figured this will just increase the power going to the speaker but perhaps i am causing some weird feedback here?
    2. The 4" speakers in the roof are in there so tight that I made small dents on the outside roof. Will the tight proximity to the steel roof cause any distortion?

Any help or similar experiences would be appreciated. Thanks!

you can disconnect those 3 rear speakers so that only the front set is playing, if it is still distorting then the problem is between the HU and the front speakers, if not then it may be the rear speakers

i had the same problem as the op, i had wires barley touching so check all connections. also look and see that the connections on the speakers aren't touching and other metal.

Hey Guys - thanks for all the tips - I'll check everything out asap and let you know what I found.

I did the wiring myself - I got the wiring harness kit and wired to the new Alpine harness using butt connectors. Then just plugged everything together. All the colors matched no problem. At the speakers i took apart the old light grey plastic clips to expose the metal terminals and then plugged these into the speakers.

The setup does sound sweet - super crisp and clear - just can't really crank it.

One more question: Will I cause distortion if insulated speaker wires are in tight with the speaker magnets?

                  Found the Problem

Hey Guys - thanks again for the advice. I isolated the issue to the rear 3 speakers. It was the 6X9 speaker! Once I separated the original wires back to 2 independent sets, all the static and crackling stopped. It was creating some strange feedback into all the speakers. Anyways, now I have an extra set of wires available for the second 6X9 but that will be another weekend. . .

                  Good luck to everyone else!
