ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

"grille" chrome paint removal: is it necessary?

i decided to paint my grille pieces black the other day. i didn't take the chrome paint off the bottom grille piece but removed most of it from the top piece. is it really necessary to do so? what if i leave it as it is? also, i used high temp. bbq paint, and i'll probably use "krylon" clear to clear coat it, will this cause cracks in the paint, because of different brands?

I just scuffed up my chrome, didn't take it off. It held up for a while (it's been professionally painted now). Different brands shouldn't crack. It's still roughly the same stuff. Plus, you aren't mixing anything.
If you want to be cautious, let the color sit for a while to cure before you clear it.

If you left it smooth, the paint might peel off. If you scuff it good with sandpaper, there should be no problems.

Why did you do flat black over gloss black?

A good scuff...primer then several coats of paint will do the job.

                  progress...more or less...

I didnt know what i was doing when i tried removing the chrome off of the top grille piece .:

i left the chrome alone on the bottom piece and scuffed each piece w/ 320 grit before painting.

i asked a friend of mine who works on cars about what i should do to smoothen out the top piece. he suggested sanding it down w/ 220 grit then sanding it some more with 400 grit. i forgot to ask him, how long do i sand it with 220 before i switch to 400?

any helpful info is much appreciated.

                  -thanks

someone made a post on how to remove the chrome paint off of the H logo by soaking it several days in solution of liquid bleach. i may go that route but i'll grab another grille from the PnP.

600 grit should be fine. Enough just to rough it up a bit. Do a couple layers of primer. Do the paint and clearcoat it. This will prevent paint chips.

EDIT:On the "craitors" on the grill, you can try bondo putty. It'll fill em in. But if its paint blemishes, do it over by using aircraft remover. Itll take the paint right off.

the paint i'm using doesnt suggest primer.

i'll try bondo. i've never used bondo so how do i go about applying it on the grill. i know common sense is a huge factor, but what would be some do's and dont's w/ this particular application.

You don't need that much bondo on it. One suggestion is don't put too much bondo on, it's a pain to sand it off unless u have a power sander or dremel. Use lower grit sandpaper first and move up once you get it to the shape you want it.

if anything, how would i use a dremel to sand it down correctly?
