Interior Paint. What paint do I need?

Hi. I would just like to gather some information on this subject for later next summer.

I planned to paint my dash board and seats and well pretty much everything to black and gray to match the black exterior paint job I will get.

I was wondering. What can I paint my seats and everything that is dash board material with? I heard of something called fabric spray paint which is exactly what the name is. Apparently you can paint all sort of fabrics with it and the part I didn't get is that it is washable but also permanent which doesn't make much sense. Anyway... Would anyone know what would do the best job? I really like the interior and don't want to buy new seats or anything. I want to keep everything original except for the paint.

Now for the dash board and similar material... What kind of paint would I need? I can't just grab a can of spray paint from a shelf of a Home Hardware because they are not meant to be used for dash boards most probably. I probably would need a special paint or something... Well I have no clue and that is obviously why I am asking.

    Thanks.

P.S. I am not planning to paint the carpet. I want to cut a new one from a similar material because I think the previous owner had a dog that peed in the car because when I bought it I could smell it and there was dog hair all over the carpet so I rather just take out the old one, write it's measurements down and cut a new carpet from a similar material. So my question is. What material would be good?

      That is very helpful. lol

Well I thought instead of surfing on the net for help someone could simply help me out here since we're all on here about our CB7 and I thought if someone did it before he could help me.

      Thanks anyway.

its best to dye it if you want a good outcome... if you do decide to paint it anyways just make sure you clean it very well and use a vinal paint or maybe some of that krylon fusion paint for plastic.... leave your ac vents stock becuase if you paint these with lots of heat and chill it will crack and end up looking like shit... and good deal on the "not paintting carpet"
the carpet will absorb to much paint and by the time you have it all looking like its all the same color... your car will smell like paint for months on end.....

oh and as for the dash board just go to the junkyard and try to get a good looking black or grey one. the dash will end up flaking as well once you or who ever else is in the car starts putting stuff up on the dash.

but if you decide to paint it anyways i dont think i would sand it... maybe just clean it very well with some alcohol.

Duplicolor vinyl and fabric paint. Thats what I used and if prepped right, won't come off vinyl or fabrics. However, do not use it on plastics, it'll scratch right off. I did 3 light coats and my doors came out very well.

I didn't plan to paint the black plastic parts like the vents or anything like that. Just whatever is made of that rubber kind of material like the dash itself, handles on the door and the roof.

Do you have pictures of your interior? I would like to know what the final result is like.

            Thanks.

I painted the interior of my old 4Runner black using the dupli-color paint. It looked terrific....until you used the vehicle. I found it would get very dry looking very quickly and even on vinyl it didn't bond that well. You also have to use tons of it. If I had done the entire truck interior I probably would've spent $200 on spraypaint.

I'd try and find a grey interior in a junkyard before bothering with all that spray. I have a grey interior in my sedan that I'm selling and I really liked it. Grey and black look very nice. I wish my wagon didn't have a blue interior.....sigh

Maybe with a final coat of something else it would keep its brilliance. I was thinking about getting a black dashboard but I have small hope in finding one in a good condition at the scrap yard. Besides, black dashboards are rare. I will definitely try and find one before I buy any kind of paint for mine and like I said, I'm just gathering information right now and I have a Coupe by the way which is even harder to find and it's not like I could find a black roof, cut it off and put it on mine so whatever I do I still will need to paint some of the interior.

So does the dashboard (and other like material components) respond pretty well do dye? Does the dye work better out of the options? Let's not forget the roof too...I lOVE that my cb7 doesn't have cloth roof...LOVE IT!!!

My dash isn't shiny...has maybe an eggshell shine to it...not flat but not gloss...I wouldn't mind keeping it like that so I'm not keen on paint to begin with but I'de like to replace all my interior cloth as it's kinda worn after 2 drivers and 14 years...but the dash and other parts need to match.

SEM has pretty much all the interior dyes and paints you'll need. You may pay more than the DUPLI-COLOR products, but it's well worth it.

SEM and VHT both make excellent vinyl/plastic dyes. They penetrate and molecularly bond to the material and change the pigment rather than just cover it like paint. I just ordered some Tintex dye for the fabrics. I prefer dye over paint for interior parts, since it won't wear off, peel, crack or chip. I have my misgivings about fabric paint for seats.

Sorry, I deleted my old pics of it so I don't have any right now, but Ill try to get a few tomorrow. That way youll see how the paint has held up over about a year.

It looks pretty nice but I was thinking about the opposite. Your interior is more Grey/Black than Black/Grey. I want my dashboard to be black while all the other similar materials too like the door handles. And for what's currently tissue on the doors, I want them grey but no leather.

So I should go for a dye rather than a paint I assume. Now my question is... Where do you get those SEm and VHT dyes?

VHT is available through Summit Racing and several other online retailers. It can also usually be found on eBay. A quick Google search should come up with plenty of places to find either one.
