    Tire Sizes Help!!!

Ok, so The wheels I have currently are wrapped in some cheap performance tires (Nankang's). I hate them with a passion! I have had all kinds of trouble with them, from blowouts to unacceptable dry traction. I will admit they were cheap for performance tires. Anyways what I am looking for is help on sizing my wheels. I dont know for sure what tire size should go with my rims. I have heard both 195/50-16's and 205/50-16's. The rims themselves, as you can see in the pics below are 16x7 1/2. The tires currently on the rims are 195/50-16's. I dont know much of anything about tire sizes. I have been looking at purchasing some Kumho ECSTA's. I just need to know what size of tires are the correct size for my wheels. 195/50-16's are what I have been looking at and pricing. I just need to know before I make a purchase that I am buying the correct size. Please let me know! Thanks in advance!

yes pretty much if the last digits are 16 then your ok, besides like muddin' tires

            just get 204/45/16

i got 205/40/17's and they are super skinny so with an extra inch and a little more sidewall it should look awesome

thanks to phempa for teh sig!

                breakin it down...

breakin it down simple form to help you understand your tires better, cause obviously you like your ride.

Ex. 195/50R16. The first number(195) represents the cross section width of the tire at its widest point(sidewall) in millimeters. The second # (50) represents the Aspect Ratio. This a big term meaning that this tire's sidewall height is 50% of the cross section width, or 50% of 195mm. The R means simply Radial tire construction. And finally the 16 represents the rim size.

since you have a 7.5 rim.. i would suggest that you get a 205 or 215 to maximize the width of the rim..

Thats what I was thinking. Thought maybe the Nankangs were too skinny for the width of my rims. And one more thing these rims have a LIP on them so what aspect ratio do I need to protect them from unavoidable pot holes?? 50? 45? Other?? Edit: is a 205 or 215 going to mess with the speedometer? Parents are worried lol.

                      I'd recommend 205/50.

205/45 will be a rubber band on a 16" If you don't have a huge drop, it'll increase your wheel gap.

Ideally, 205/50 keeps with the stock tire size in a +1 form.

For the 14" wheel, the OEM tire size is 185/70. For the 15" wheel, the OEM tire size is 195/60. So the ideal size for a 16" wheel would be 205/50. I'm sure you could try and run a 215/50, which wouldn't be bad, but its going to be an expensive tire, since its an odd size.

                      Honestly I'm surprised they put a 195 tire on a 7.5" wheel.

Yeah me too. They told me "a wider tire like a 205 would mess up the speedometer" and the parents didnt want no part of that. I have learned more about tire sizes with this post. I see now how badly they screwed me over. Which is probably the reason that I have had so much trouble with these tires. They would pop off of the rim if I took a corner fast and I probably wouldnt have all the rim damage that I have if it werent for these small tires. Thanks again guys!

For future reference this is an excellent site to do with tires.

                          http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

                          Just to show you:

                          Stock EX Tire Size

                          Radius 12.1, Sidewall 4.6", Revs/mi 833.0

                          195/50-16

                          Radius 11.8, Sidewall 3.8", Revs/mi 852.0

                          205/50-16

                          Radius 12.0, Sidewall 4.0", Revs/mi 838.0

See how much closer the radius and revs/mi is on the 205/50 vs the 195/50? Also the extra sidewall will give you a cushier ride and save your rims from getting bent a little better.

Ok so I looked at the site posted above. Couldnt get it to work. Searched for Tire Size Calculators and found this one. http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp

Gives all the measurements and you can see the results of the change in tire size side by side. I found it to be very helpful. Looks like I am going with the 205/50-16's
