ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!
Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956
Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)
Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.
These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.
1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.
2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.
3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.
4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.
The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.
The rules for the overall forum can be found here:
http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/forumdisplay.php?f=144
Read them. You will be expected to follow them.

Here is an example of a single stage laquer, it's not the best....but it's a good example of this style of paint finishing:

I love that guy!
TypeG is awesome. That guy introduced me to Mother's Plastic Polish and mag polish and all that crazy obsessively clean stuff. On a side note....
DO NOT SPRAY PAINT YOUR CAR WITH "HIGH QUALITY AUTO SPRAY PAINT"
I polished the paint right off my old 86 Accord so I decided since it was down to steel (Literally) I decided to spray paint it black... that did NOT look good. Why? Because... Life Happens @ 4500 RPM

Ya, basically all modern finished are more advanced....like base-coat/clear-coat finishes and baked finishes. Because the clears are catalized with hardeners they are a lot more durable and stand up to the daily rigors of commuting and the weather better. The old-school approach of single stage paints requires a lot more maintnance because they are soft, and are normally not durable enough to stand up to everyday driving and maintain a beautiful shine.1992 Accord LX - SOLD

mmm old school lacquer paint
Yeah, sherwin williams does make automotive finsihes - and hear they're not to bad, but I'd stick to PPG or Sikkens
and if my IS is painted in a single stage, i'm impressed that they got such a high-quality pearl in there, (because it certainly LOOKS like a two stage)
I personally shy away from single stage in any case where i have the time, sorry to use a girly example, but to me, single stage paint is like 2-in-1 shampoo/ conditioner : no matter what you pay or what "quality" they claim, the finish is never as good as if i bought two separate products with the exact specifications im looking for
but as for housepaint - latex is not exactly made to bond to metal, and of course you can argue that if you prime it right you can paint it -latex is a VERY flexible paint even when dried - thats why it takes so well to the not so baby bottom smooth drywall surfaces of houses which tend to "break it up" and keep it in place - but the qualities of latex paint are not so that they could be sanded and tweaked and sprayed and all that stuff that makes a beautiful paint job a beautiful paint job on a CAR
urethane paints, which are most common in the auto painting process, cure (harden) at a much higher level, are much more durable and bond well to such smooth, not-so-porous surfaaces like metal -- they also take well to being coated sanded recoated and sanded again...etc... which is the crucial step in a deep color finish with limited orange peel
also remember as a rule of thumb, its not the best idea to mix different paints with different bases (latex or urethane or oil... etc...) even when cured they don't necessarily adhere to eachother and may actually chemically react in a way that would cause them to deteriorate or discolor at a faster or unpredictable rate ... keep that in mind with cars, interiors, anything ....
theres my novella - i'm done for now

a lot of people like to push of paint as an easy thing - but its not - if you want a quality job. and what you all need to remember that PREPPING THE BODY is 95% of the battle
a million dollars worth of paint isnt gonna look good if your lines arent straight and your panels arent flat
**to add** using two- and three-stage paints give you more flexibilty bar none, because you're not getting it all wrapped up in one can. urethane of all the other auto-grade choices is your most common and therefore will be your most affordable pick - IMO its also the "easiest" of the evils to work with - just always remember to take your timeLast edited by i'm the girl; 03-22-2006, 03:40 PM.

Just have a couple of questions. when painting a car should you use horizontal strokes, and how far should you be away? If it makes a difference I'm going to be using a 2 stage paint process. also does the stroke direction or area in between the car and you matter when it comes to clear coat or base coat?
