Custom grills good airflow or not?

I browsed the GRILL FAQ but couldnt find the answer my bc i wanted to change the look of my front grill but i havent found a thread nor answer.

If i pick the wrong mesh for my grill, will the engine run hottter due to insufficient aitflow to the radiator.

No, the only way you could significantly affect it is by blocking the entire front off. You'll be fine.

The reason i asked was All the other grills ive seen in here were all wire mesh and somewhat bigger squared off or diamond holes which would allow good airflow. i was going to buy this mesh

It looked like it would restrict quite a bit of air. I figured it was going to be alright. I knew someone would know here.

I think the above would look sweet. I plan to either cut it to the inside contour of the grill. Line the mesh with rubber trim to slot in and stick it to double sided 3m tape.

Cut enough to wrap the mesh from the front of the grill. So far it looks like everyone wraps it around the back of the grill. I cant wait to do this project. More pics to come. Hopefully no one bits on my idea. If someone does, no worries. Just hook us up how it looks.

Consider the size of the grill opening to the radiator size. You could likely block off the entire grill and not notice a difference.

There was a major shift in auto design in the mid 70's to early 80's as research found there was more airflow under the car as opposed to the front. Basically there's more air volume flowing under the car than across the front. So manufacturers switched to designs which actually draw up from under the car and into the radiator. Just look at most 80's import designs, most of them don't even have a grille inbetween the headlights.

Good to know. Just think...i only joined to learn some troubleshooting tips for a problem i had but it has open my mind to getting to know about my ride. With what you said, i might not go with a mesh grill, i might fabricate something solid faced front look with some color. I dont know yet. When i do, it will be posted here.

I would recommend looking for a G square grille(authentic/replica). They are probably the most open grill available.

This whole thread is basically about how it is not necessary to have an open grille...
Hollowing out a factory grille will result in one that is just about as wide. Not quite as attractive as a G Square, but just as free flowing. Not that it matters all that much.

If you ever play with it on the CB7, please post pics! My car is gone, so I can't do it I always thought they'd look awesome with that style, though. Too bad the Honda H wouldn't look right where the blue oval is.
