ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

    Inside door panel plastic replacement?

I searched, I may have missed it, I apologize if so.

I'm also not sure if this question belongs here or the other beginner thread.

I'm stripping down the carpet panel sections on the doors to redo them with the vinyl diy on here, and also have to fix the driver window track on the driver door and replace the motor in the back rear door.

Long story short, I have to take off that crappy 23 y/o plastic lining inside the doors. Should I replace it? Do I have to? With what? My neighbor suggested the black anti-weed plastic(cuz it's pretty thick he said) that they sell at like lowe's, thoughts?

    Thanks in advance.

if you don't tear it, i see no point in replacing it, but if you do, that weed stuff sounds ideal. later.

I recently had to take that plastic off of my drivers side door. I took it off in a way where I could make a good template from it which I don't think is completely necessary but it helped me cut the new one. I took the time and pealed as much of the old adhesive off as I could before applying new plastic.

I used clear construction film from Lowes. This stuff. http://www.lowes.com/pd_16955-18632-...oll&facetInfo=

      And Loctite construction adheisive. http://www.lowes.com/pd_100575-69-17...ive&facetInfo=

There are other materials that can be used. These were easy to find and relatively cheap. And I chose materials that I though would be available in the future. In other words Lowes had a lot of both of these products on hand.

As Type G stated, if you don't destroy or stretch the plastic that it already has, the adhesive is still tacky and will stick back in place. I however did not do that out of ignorance of that fact.

that plastic is mostly for wind noise then anything else (unlike some other models where it is mandatory to keep the water from leaking inside the car...like most new bmw models for exemple)

meaning u dont HAVE to reinstall it, if you rip it and dont want to take time to buy/fabricate a new one with other plastic from hardware stores, you could always use duct tape to fix the parts u ripped off...

but while your in there it could also be a good time to upgrade for something better like dynamat http://http://www.b-quiet.com/dynamat.html

whenever i remove those plastics from any cars (being a body man i do that often) i use a blade or a metal bondo spatula that i sharpened for that purpose to avoid ripping it

you can use ''dumdum'' (butyl strings) to stick them back on.

I honestly don't know what its for other than to keep rain or water from possibly getting to the electrical components on the back side of the door panel. That and maybe a dust/dirt barrier and partly for sound dampening. I can't remember if my S14 has it or not.

I got fed up with mine and ripped it out completely years ago. I've never noticed any negative effects of doing so. The car is parked outside, and has been through all sorts of weather. Never any leaks. The exhaust is loud, so it's pretty tough to tell if the noise increased as a result of removing it... so it might make a difference if your car is stock.

The main reason for it is to prevent dust from gravel roads getting inside the cabin.
