    Paint question

I recently bought a cb7 coupe off a follow memeber named geo(cb7inct) and the rust was repaired before him and the owner sparyed lots of primer on the quaters and now its all shinny but bang you see the primer. I work at advance auto parts and we sell oem paint and im wondering if Duplicolor spary paint is any good? Below is a pic of the primer im talking about. I was thinking just buying two cans and clear coat and sparying it on but ive never done it before

Help would be very nice. Thanks

Duplicolor is good, yes. It's about as good as you're going to find in a spray can. However, that OEM paint is going to be VERY faded, so the fresh paint won't look all that great.

To be honest, getting the whole car painted would be your best bet. If you don't have a lot of money, take the sucker to Maaco. They do decent work for the price (my car has had 2 Maaco jobs... the paint was fine both times, but the rust repair never held up.)

I doubt it will match. It might look better, but it usually doesnt match. Even if it is the same paint code, since it is the original paint it has likely faded or worn out, so the new paint will not match. Best bet is to get the whole car painted.

Ya i was thinking about the maaco paintjob since i got the car and ive called afew maacos around and they want $399.99 with a free clear coat and a 2 year warranty. But they want an extra $100 to paint the trim. The cars paint besides the primer looks great! Its got a great shine. The paint is near mint besides the primer. You think it will big a huge difference with the new paint???

Oh yeah... believe me... new paint will be like having a new car! My first paintjob was done about a week before my very first CB7tuner meet. I had an H22 swap (a big deal in 2004!) and the new paintjob. Everyone took more interest in the paint than they did the swap! Having my car freshly painted really made me proud of it. Before the paint, it was just an ugly thing that was carrying my nice engine.

Alright i think ill save alittle and get a maaco paintjob then. Should i sand it down or just bring it in? The guy did say its got a 2 year warranty so if it chips or starts to peel they will repair it for no charge. And in 2 years ill have another for a better paintjob much better!

I'd leave the prep work to them. It cost me a bit for prep, but it's better than peeling paint... though if you want to do it with the warranty, go for it. Just be sure there's no stupid clauses in the warranty agreement... like "you cannot drive your car in snow, rain, or sunlight". Warranties make companies money because 50% of the people never use them, and half of the remaining 50% does something to void the warranty before they can make use of it.

Ya I asked the guy alot of questions when I called. He said as long as i dont put paint thinner or some shit on it. Then its covered! I was like so in 1 year and 364 days and its starting you peel would you guys fix it and he said yes if they have a opening which he said they will be. So that sold me right there. But thanks man!

Sweet. Good deal! My rust repair started rusting again, and I accused them of using bondo instead of welding a patch in... they agreed to fix it for free (and repaint) if there was no welded patch. There was... but it was rusting along the weld! So I paid for another paintjob, and a second rust repair... it came back AGAIN.

The first one failed in less than 2 years... I wish I had that warranty then!

Ya that had to suck! All my rust was cut off and fiberglassed. But i looked for rust for over an hour and couldnt find anything! Thank god! Because I hate rust! But ya ill hold them to that warranty or ill have to bring there asses to court because it will be a written agreement

If it was just fiberglassed, it probably won't last forever. Good enough for a Maaco job, but if you plan on putting money into a REAL paintjob down the road, I suggest getting that removed and a proper patch panel welded in.

Ya that was my plan. I know its gonna cost a good $600 too replace both sides and $1200 for a nice paintjob that will last years. I wanna do something crazy tho. Maybe graffiti or something. I wanna stick out

Fiberglass won't be rusting out on you.
It'll be cracking out, as metal and fiberglass expand and contract at different rates.

Most any local body shop in your area would be willing to paint your quarter panel and blend your door for a very reasonable price. If you truely think your car is in great shape, an all over paint job is not needed to make your paint match. Any body shop can color tint your paint to match fairly easily.

By staying on the 2 panels, you'll have less chance of something failing as well.

I didn't mean fiberglass will rust... just the metal around it. That usually happens when any non-metal is used to replace a rusted-out piece.

The amount of money it would cost to properly color-match and blend a faded 20 year old paint job will most likely be more than a Maaco full-car spray. Personally, if I wanted a full paintjob for cheap, Maaco would be my choice. Maaco told me up front that it's cheaper for them to spray the car than to color match... and whatever Maaco can do will most certainly be cheaper than a "real" body shop! If I'm going to pay the price for a high quality shop to do the work, I don't want to pay to have a colormatched job done to my old paint.

                              Look at it like this.

Your house inside is beautiful, and your nephew comes over and puts a hole in your drywall right in you living room where everyone sits and sees it.
Now it is an eye sore and it needs to be repaired correctly so that the joints don't crack out and look ugly in the future. Just because someone didn't back brace it and mider the drywall joints and use fiber tape.
Now thats done you need a professional to correctly prep and prime the surface so that the paint won't peel crack or delaminate in the future as well.
The paint is old so a color sample is the best way to get it matched, so they take it and blend the paint out across the wall giving that seemless repair,

At this point you feel like you hired a professional for the right job. And in deed you did, unfortunately something was wrong with the batch of primer that was sold to him and in less than 2 years time the paint begins to peel and crack and bubble off the wall that was fixed, This was not his fault but the products fault, would this have happened if he had baught a higher grade paint, more than likely not but all things are possible. His year warrenty is up so he will not repair the wall for free, even though he has a great reputation.

At this point your frustrated but your not overwhelmed, because you realize you only painted the 1 wall by only painting that one infected area you were able to keep failure from happening to your whole house, or the rooms connected to the color that was repaired.
Put your car in the story and you'll see my point of view.
Keep repairs as small as possible, and don't put a lesser quality product over something that is nice to begin with.
