ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

    Painting and Sanding Question

I have a bumper and fender that needs to be painted and put on a car. Problem is I want to spend the least amount of money right now as I'm getting a whole car fixed. I don't mind putting it on and painting it later on properly.

    1) Will it cost more for a shop to paint the bumper and fender detached instead of being on the bumper and painting it there?
    2) Sanding the body parts down to get ready for paint, how hard is it to do this and how is it done? (I'd rather sand it myself then get a shop to do it)
    3) A good paint job that doesn't break the bank consists of: ?
    (Like Primer, Paint, Paint, Clearcoat)
    4) What do you use for painting the black bumper guard on the bumpers?
    Current:
    2007 Acura TL Type-S 6MT KBP

    Past:
    1992 Honda Accord EX-R Sedan - RIP
    1991 Honda Accord EX-R Wagon - RIP 10/14/2010

It'll be cheaper for a shop to spray it all apart. To prep the parts for paint all you have to do is scuff it with a gray scotchbrite pad. A sealer is sprayed down first, then basecoat, and finally clearcoat. Black trim paint is good for spraying the bumper guards and side moldings.

It will be cheaper when you bring a piece of body part to the shop for them to paint. But there might be a chance the paint might not match your car color... the shades or tint might be slightly off... since the car is not at the shop for them to tint match you whole car.

You can sand with a 800-1000 grit sandpapesr or grey scuff pad (scotchbrite pad).. (dual action) DA sander w/ 500 grit if you got one. DO NOT striped to bare metal..unless you are doing metal work.

      Yes... Primer/sealer, base paint, clearcoat.

      4) What do you use for painting the black bumper guard on the bumpers?

Bumper trim, black trim paint..and custom black paint.

Automotive masking tape, get the good stuff or it will curls up and let paint get on whatever you are taping off. Also don't hesitate to just put down more tape if you're not confident in what you have down already
Being normal is probably the lamest thing you can try to be

Do you mean use the masking tape right over the parts I want to protect?
Just saying, all the paint jobs I've seen they use some type of "paperish" material to cover it down then masking tape goes on the side, just like this. What is that paperish stuff?

Also will this be good enough for masking tape?

I'm just guessing the masking tape holds the "paperish" material in place.

Ive seen people use craft paper and or newspaper. I used newspaper and painters tape and didnt get any overspray. You just waste alot more tape using newspaper because you have to tape all of the seems, as where that automotive masking paper comes off in one big sheet, and you can cut it to fit so you only have to mask the edges (if that makes sense)

That tape should work fine, but when I painted my car I used the green 3m tape instead. It bonds better, doesnt leave any residue, and its easier to take off. Heres a few pics of how my car looked masked off when me and my buddy painted in 2 weeks ago:

And heres how it turned out:

Take any lights out that you can. bumper trim you can mask of with masking tape (just make sure you get the tape straight, otherwise it will look like crap) If you are going to paint it, I would suggest taking off all your lights, front and rear bumper, grille, and trunk badges at the very least.
