ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

How much cast aluminum is under the hood?

Because I like the look of polished aluminum, I'd like to know what all is aluminum under the hood. I polished my distributor and it made a HUGE difference so I was wondering whether the valve cover is aluminum and the intake manifold, throttlebody, etc. So just wondering what all I can clean up and polish to make my engine look nice. Thanks.

you can polish any metal in the engine bay if you want. I polished my valve cover, engine block, intake manifold and a few other parts. check out my engine bay thread in my sig for pics.

Oh wow, I didn't realize the block could be gotten that well. I thought that steel didn't polish as nicely as aluminum, but how did you get that done to the block? Sand it with a DA sander or a dremmel or something to get it clean?

          The block is aluminum.

That surprises me. But the internals are all iron and the sleeves must be iron, correct? Otherwise the block wouldn't be so great for boosting.

The block isn't really "great" for boosting. It's a strong design, but not exactly made for turbo. The compression is low, though... so resistance to detonation is high. It's forgiving when tuning, which makes it a good choice for turbo. The ringlands will go after a certain amount of abuse, however.

I didn't think pistons could be made of aluminum, doesn't aluminum warp from heat worse than iron/steel?

It depends on the type, I'm sure. But yes, our pistons are aluminum. Unless I am terribly mistaken (it wouldn't be the first time... but I generally don't say anything unless I'm quite sure) If you've ever had a chance to hold an F22A piston, you'd see that it's extremely light. It's a bit strange, really... it looks like it would be much heavier than it really is.

When it comes to forged pistons (which ours are not, but aftermarket upgrades should be), there are two varieties. High silicon and low silicon. High silicon pistons expand less when exposed to heat, and are good for NA engines. For turbo engines, they tend to be brittle. Low silicon pistons are best for turbo. They expand a bit, but are stronger. Low silicon pistons in a built turbo engine need added room in the bores, which results in a diesel-like cold idle. This does cause wear, and is one reason why turbo engines have a reputation for wearing out faster. Stronger iron sleeves are definitely a good idea in this case.

Sorry, I've gone WAY off topic here!
