they go roughly for about 100-150 bucks, depends on where you get them and stuff.
i found a lady who's chinchilla had recently had babies, so we got one off of her for 60 bucks. he really belongs to my older brother but his gf is allergic to the hair so we just keep it at my mother's house.
they love chewing on things and pooping everywhere they run but they do make a fun pet.

In response to recent questions, chinchillas go for nearly $100-$200 but you can get them cheaper if you know the breader or better yet if you get them as babies. The expensive one's are the ones with rare colors such as ebony. They are VERY clean animals and taking care of them isn't even that tough. I use cedar shavings on the bottom of Shinji's cage and he takes a piss in the corner of his cage everytime. I have never seen him take a piss anywhere else. As for poop cleanup, its nearly the same. They are little pellets that don't stain and don't stink. They do crap all over when you let them out of the cage, but that just comes with the territory. They shower themselves in volcanic ash which you buy at the pet store. They simply swirl themselves in a little house filled with the dust. They eat pellets as well as hay cubes or alfalfa/timothy. I'd say the best thing is watching them move around, they are fast and very nimble. Mine has a vertical of about 3ft which is ridiculous!
...adjust accordingly
