    some insects around my house

up first, an orb spider. also called garden spider by some.

this spider is quite large. when a bug lands in its web, it quickly wraps it up with no hesitation. this spiders bite is not fatal to humans. you probably would feel nothing more than a slight burning sensation.

up next is the ''it'' bug, the praying mantis. all the ones i've seen before this were green, at least in person. this one was a purple color and was about 6'' long. when i would get near him, he would start rocking to mimic a branch blowing in the wind......i guess he hoped i wouldn't eat him or notice him.

next, a rather strange insect. it looks like a mix between a roach and a cricket. i have a stone porch infront of my house where i sit occasionally. this is where i saw his antenna floating in the air from under the ledge. they were very long and looked like hair from a woman's head. this is what captivated me to mess with it. i had to look over the edge to see what the antennie were attached to. i saw that the insect had its rear end jambed into a crack. i took a piece of pinestraw and began digging him out. after a while, i finally got him out of the crack. he just laid there. i thought i must have killed it. i turned it over and over, nothing. then it suddenly got up and ran into a crevice. i was humored to find it was playing possum. i only got one pic before it took off. if you look close, you can see its golden anttena and how long it is.

i never have my camera when i see the really bizzare insects. i'll leave you with a pic from a local aquarium. i think it maybe a box jelly, but i'm not sure.

    later.

Orb spider, huh? So that's what they are called. I've seen those, or something very similar --- with a strange web.

Most of it's normal, but part of it has a vertical rectangular section inside. First time I saw it I though the spider made a web around gutter guard ...

October is the month spiders go crazy outside my place, so I guess I'll start taking pics.

you don't have to be a fan of spiders to not kill them, you have to be intelligent and appreciate what they do for YOU.....go look up the stats for how many insects (mosquitoes, gnats, flies, ants) they kill that directly affect humans.....

as for brown recluses, they're some of the least aggressive spiders there are, but they like to take up residence in shoes, clothing in the closet, etc...you can actually pick most of them up and move them and they'll never bite.....i had a lot in my apartment a couple of years ago but i just put them in jars and moved them to the woods......there were some large ones too, half dollar sized leg-spans, but they weren't looking for anything but somewhere to stay and something to eat, neither of which depended on me......

killing spiders is a good way to guarantee an insect will fuck with you soon, and remember, rodents (snake food) and insects (bat and spider food) kill more humans with disease than anything......

i'd much rather put up with spiders than mosquitoes and their incessant buzzing, possible disease infested bite, etc.......

remember, spiders keep those fuckers away better than bats do....normally, bats fly a bit higher than mosquitoes like to go, so they only get preyed on by SOME SMALL BIRDS during the day and then spiders the rest of the time.....most of the spiders you'll see, you can pick up and move and even black widows and brown recluses, a stick will do the trick.....

Agreed. And I'd be happier if the outdoor spiders showed up en masse earlier than October. Here in Georgia (well, maybe you have them in Ala. too) we have LARGE brown roaches --- American cockroaches, aka Palmetto bugs aka Water bugs --- inside the house in the summer (OK, maybe it's just me). We do the usual stuff like get rid of standing water, clean up food etc. but it isn't enough.

I swear during June - September they have zero predators except me.

A few years ago it was 1-3 per day during the summer --- that's infestation --- got some "Hot Shot Max Attrax" powder @ Home Depot. Boric Acid truly "FTW".

the thing a lot of people don't know about the brown recluse is that to most people, their bite is harmless. what i mean is the average person gets a bite from them and it usually heals up on it's own. it's only when a person has a reaction to the venom that they get the ulcers, disfigurement, ect. that leaves them with missing extremities, scars and most often permanent pain.

josh, i have no pics of rollie pollies, lol. aka potato bug - sow bug. i used to find them everywhere as a kid, but now they seem far and few in between.

deckeda, i know what you mean by the flying roaches. they're always hanging out in my garage and sometimes in the house. i have a rubber band that i use on them. later.

here is another spider. i'm not sure of the kind, but i've heard them refered to as the shell spider and hobo spider.

that's a fly in his web (i know because i threw it in there). if you look closley, you can see it's missing 2 legs.
