the EGR ports are a PAIN to get to on h22 manifolds! ever consider just seafoaming the darn thing? what cat are you running too? if the stock cat, that is prolly what's causing you to fail as well. over 10 years old, do you think it's still filtering at its best?
Yeah Tim, to clean those ports me and Jesus took the intake manifold off and sprayed about 10 cans of carb cleaner through it. It's a pretty big job, plus the expense of new gaskets. I did install a new cat, and now I'm thinking it is a POS, and I almost want to put the original cat back on just to see the difference next try. Although the tech claims the cat is fine.

Well to update my troubles, the car failed again. Boo Hoo, Hell Fire and Torment. The numbers were even a little bit worse than last time, I'll post up the report in a minute.

The tech let the car sit for exactly 30 minutes before cranking the car back on and doing the test. Then after the test he claims the cat was not cold, and it couldn't be the cat blah blah blah. He thinks I should diagnose the EGR, which I kind of did, but not fully. Then he suggested I run chevron gas, because "arco, costco, sams club gas can cause cars to fail emmisions"

        Kane,

        * Next time arrive right on Time and leave the car running.. because the cat cools down in 5-10 minutes. If its cold and not doing its job.
        * Whats the condition of your O2 sensor? The 15 mph test kills everyone.. I really doubt its your 02 sensor since it cleaned up fine in 25mph test..
*Also what kind of gas do you run in there? Sometimes the after market cats suck donkey di@k..
*Check your egr valve and make sure its clean of any carbon deposits..
        * Spark Plugs. What kind are you running?

I see you passed the other visual aspects of the test..

*Thats what I did and they told me I had to shut the car off.
*02 sensor is one year old OEM Honda Prelude sensor.
*I am running costco gas, so I'll try the chevron suggestion but I always ran ARCO gas in the F22 for years and years.....it never failed ever.
*EGR valve has been cleaned recently
          *Running NGK PZFR6F-11

Thats the thing, I run OEM EVERYTHING down to the battery etc. LOL. The only thing on the engine that isn't oem is the Cat, header and downpipe.

Arco gas leaves a nasty residue on your pistons. Trust me i noticed this when I took off my cylinder head for porting.. My buddy was like your running AMPM gas huh? im like NO.. hes like look at your pistons..

Maybe next time you will go straight on the rollers.. I say try your old cat and see what happens. I know its 30 bucks, but see if your numbers decrease..
I could try to stop by and ask my friend what he suggests.. He is a smog tech.. Or maybe you can contact Tony aka Raceboy, I believe his dad is a tech..

I think the only way the car will go straight to the rollers is if I take it to san diego. They have done this to me twice now, letting the cat get cold.

Thanks for the suggestions Craig and definately get back to me on what your friend says.

Friend says it could be a number of things.. Maybe Try another 02 sensor and see what the readings are..

                high HC = unburnt fuel
High NO = most likely caused by high combustion chamber temp/pressure or malfunctioning EGR valve. If you have another egr valve maybe try that?

Best bet would be to find a smog shop that will run a TEST RUN on your car to see where your at.. I usually go to Budget Smog in Vista California, they helped me at bar 3 times and can give you tips on passing smog.. Say for example if your nox is high, they will suggest you schedule a morning appt since the cold air will knock down your readings etc.. Test runs is what i did, this way you know how close you are and you avoid spending tons of money on a new cat or even a new o2 sensor.. Any mechanic can tell you a new 02 sensor, egr or catalytic converter will knock down your readings, but unless they put it on the rollers and measure it with a smog machine, you'll prob end up spending more money then you need to.. Thats just my 0.02 cents.. If you can find a shop up there that does test runs and can diagnose your car for free then try them.. If not i highly recommend Ty & Bob at Budget smog..

damn kane, you barely passed the hc on the second run. where is your timing set to?? I would double check for intake leaks, try another cat, and use a different plug. I think the pzfr6f11 is not what it's called for on preludes. I think it's pfr6l somethin. I forgot. but deff. not the pzfr6f11. you must run your cat till it's very hot. I think those guys are fucking asshole for doing that to you. run chevron 91 pump gas, one full tank, then go smog it again. my experience with a jdm h22 that was a gross polluter, I did valve adj., new plugs, (didn't even clean out egr ports), new hi flow cat from pacesetter, new o2 sensor, and put timing at 15 or 16 (Iforgot). I think I did more too, it's been two years now. That prelude was a gross polluter, and after everything, it passed. BARELY!!!!!!! be careful, your car almost gross polluted.

hc, unburnt fuel, cat conv. My opinion,
The beginning of a new era............................
165 hp 149 ft. lb. torque sohc non vtec. then....
184 whp and 149 ft. lb. torque f20b stock now......

Timming is set to 15, but it shows 16 on the report above. The spark plugs are correct, as I have the prelude helms manual and made sure of that.

Thanks also for the suggestions, I'm going to run the car at a smog shop tomorrow to see if the results differ from the ref, then take it from there.

It is pretty confusing. The car runs excellent, idles excellent, full power etc etc.

Compare your results to the Refs Datasheet and see how close they are. if they're pretty much the same, change some components and test it again. This will be your way to see if you really want to waste your time going to the ref and failing again. If you pass with flying colors at the test only place, then schedule a appt.

I agree with Josue.. I believe its your CAT..

i wonder if you put a another in cat and disquise it as a resonater; would it decrease the chances of failing?

crazy idea, and illegal but hey whatever passes the rollers!

I used a vafc on both my cars to lean out the fuel -.15 at 1000 - 1800 rpms. The way around this is just fill the floor area with dirty laundry, and see if they want to move it to check the code on your ecu.. Yeah its dirty but the ole jockstrap on top deters them from checking if you now have the correct ecu or a vafc hooked up..

LOL, yeah those guys actually went to the trouble of removing my ecu shield to check the ecu. They didn't put it back on right, even put two bolts on one stud and didn't get another stud through the hole in the shield
