so how do we go about getting a different exhaust and avoid dumb tickets like the one above? Can we get legal aftermarket exhaust?

to the police, any exhaust that even looks aftermarket is a warrant for a ticket.
before I would have told you to get a quiet exhaust like the ws2, greddy sp1/sp2, or rsr ex mag and if you even got a ticket you could contest it with a decibel test to show its compliance.
however, it seems you are at the cop's mercy because he can make it correctable or not correctable; if he checked the latter, you wont be able to do the testing and have to pay the $250 fine.
I still have the decibel reading test from my exhaust with me, so I think i'm okay if I get popped.
Some people believe they're issueing non-correctables to get more money out of you since the state/country economy isnt doing so well.
I think the only way you can get away with an aftermarket is if you paint if flat black :P. ES Oval looks completely stock but has a grunt to it.

Got pulled over yesterday with my CB. Officer was really nice.
Officer: What year is your car?
Me: 90 Officer.
O: Do you have a stock motor under the hood?
Me: No.
O: What year is the motor?
Me: 94.
O: Can I take a look under the hood?
Me: Sure thing.
O: Would you open the hood for me?
Me: (gets out opens the hood)
He looks under. Sees that everything is about stock. (stock intake, stock jdm header, wires everywhere.
)
Me: My car is basically stock under the hood, no aftermarket I/H, NO power additives, NOS. I've taken the car to the state ref to get BAR'd, but failed the emissions test. I need a new CAT, and check the timing.
O: Your motor and car looks so clean for a 90. The reason I pulled you over is because of your exhaust. (Greddy SP1) Anyway have a good night, and good luck with getting it BAR'd.

Iam thinking opposite from you guys. Johnny painted the exhaust I have flat black and lately been thinking of polishing it up. Iam 50/50 right now though.
Almost T-boned this lady in a HD F-150 on the way home. Was rollin down the street in the #2 lane and she pulls out E from the intersection to make a S left. she sees me comin, she speeds up and I try to stop and pull to the right. she stops too and blocks both lanes............dumb bitc....... my brakes work pretty good though
