well, if its not the motor that came in your car from factory, im pretty sure you have to get it BARed first.

you take your car to the stae reff to get it bard, so the swap is legit, so when you get pulled ova for any reason, and the cops make you pop your hood, they wont be able to do nothing bout it bcua you have it bard
lisa is long gone, but sophie is here!

I think you wont need to get bar'd.If you have 2.2L in your car the smog tech wont care if its dohc or vtec just make sure its the same year engine or newer than your car.Well i think my smog tech wouldn't care. Now if i put a say GSR 1.8L in my cb7 then he might make me go see a state ref and get bar'd.If your willing to spend money to get bar'd and some papers got for it.I got my papers when i bought my engine so im legit.

If the specific engine you swap in was not offered on that particular vehicle (ie H22 in a CB7), it HAS to be refereed to be smoggable in a regular smog shop. Any knowledgeable smog tech will fail you on the visual for modified equipment. And if you want to put in an F22B, you might want to go and talk with the state ref before you start since that motor was not offered here in the US (as far as I know). The motor installed needs to have a US spec equivalent (H22A = H22A1/4, ZC = D16A6, etc) to be able to pass the ref. Of course, there are smog techs that don't know Hondas well enough to know that the CB7 never came with a DOHC motor...

I agree...Well i know that the numbers behind the A's are US specs but im pretty sure you can pass with JDM engines you just need your emissions wired up correctly and properly.

Oh yeah if your emissions numbers come out to pass and is burning correclty i see no need for a ref. just what i think. Not saying everyone should do it my way.Oh well.. good luck TechMech, hope you get the car running properly that will be the first step.Search was my best friend use it wisely.

Smog reports dont say if you have a dohc or sohc or vtec or jdm so im pretty sure you'll be okay if you have a 2.2L engine in your car.Good luck.I hope that smog tech your going to wont be that much of a hassle for ya.

I think its illegal if the smog tech tells you why your not passing.Hey thats how the make their money.

Like I said... If the engine wasn't offered in the vehicle, it HAS to be ref'd. Doesn't matter if it is still a 2.2L or a 220L. The point is, it's not the factory engine. And as for JDM motors, if there is a US equivalent it can be ref'd.

And I'm not just talking out my ass here either. All of this info came straight from the CA B.A.R. technician when I ref'd my H22 CB7. If you want to take the chance and just go to a smog shop and hope they don't notice, go right ahead. It's been done. But if you want to do it right and you put anything other than a factory replacement engine (F22A, F20A), just go ref it. This is not about how we think it SHOULD be, this is about how the state sees it.

I can understand its the right way to do things if you wanted your car bar'd.If it pass smog it pass.Riding around on a legit engine.. its coo.Just make sure you dont live in an area where cops are constantly popin hoods for mods.If there is an area where they do that.
I herd the CA Governator signin a new law making smog tolerances more tighter.Watch out guys might not pass smog this year.
