Peterborough, Ontario members - I need some help

So I'm deciding whether or not to import my car. Import or not, it won't be cheap. I don't have a job yet and probably can't get one for another month or even two. Odds are I should just use the bus till I get a steady income.

Now, KingJames is willing to sell his Civic at $1000 but he says it needs work. Is there anyone near Ptbo who would be willing to help me out with the work?

    What car are you importing?

I'm no financial advisor, but for a new car you should probably have a job or atleast a job lined up.

If your going to save for it, its easier to save without paying insurance and repairs and gas. Its not like you need it to commute to work lol.

That's what I keep thinking, unfortunately.

        1) Job's are needed for something like that for sure. (What car?)
        2) Don't you have a CB already?

I do have a CB but I'd have to import it from the US to Can. I'm researching expected cost.

Unless it heavily modded, its not worth it.

You have to do alot of bullshit stuff to get it here. I have talked to people who have imported cars when they moved here and they had to do things like get bilingual filler caps for the gas, or remove the DRL. Its just an accord. I would sell it there and just buy something faster here when you get a job.

Thats the thing though. Because it's over 15 years old it doesn't need the Federal inspection. I just need to get it inspected in Ontario. I have to figure out what that'll include but I understand it's cheaper. Still, it may not be worth it.

I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. Import the car for under $1000, buy James's for $1000 (plus parts plus work), go without a car for a while and use the bus (far cheapest option), or something else.

If it's not modded, you can pick up CB's from Kijji for 500-600, recently I saw a MINT dx 92/93 Accord that was a coupe and manual, you can find mint ones but you'll have to look around not that hard.

Just to let you know.....I fixed all the shit thats wrong with it....got it saftied today and its actually on the road legally.....Id have to say 1100 now just cuz I just spent 250 on parts to get it on the road.

The only other cost youd have to pay is 50-70 bucks for a safety to get it in your name......etest is good till June.

Ive yet to find any cbs in as good of shape as this civic is for the same price.....Most cbs around here have pretty bad rust issues and higher mileage.....Just a quick look on kijiji and I saw the majority worth owning are at least the same price as this eg but will likely need at the very least a little bit of work....I dont doubt you can find a gem....but the odds are not great and itll likely take awhile.....do whatever you feel is the best option as I really am in no rush to sell the car....If/when I sell it Ill need to somehow find another car to drive anyways haha.

                    Cool man.

I'm just having trouble justifying importing my car. There's no awesome, hands down answer. I do like that EG but I also wouldn't mind another CB - I sure as shit have enough parts for it :P A CB 5 door would be sweet.

                    blahhh I don't know.

The EG would be better on gas too I think, right? I can't imagine the CB (2.2) getting better than a 1.5.

I average 550-600 a tank with it....and thats about 50/50 highway and city driving

The best I ever got with my cb was around 550 (all highway) but most of the time it was mid 400s.....and obviously the cb has a bigger tank.

I would honestly say not to import your car.....I also wouldnt necessarily buying another car either until you are more situated here.....If you buy some random cb off kijiji it could be riddled with problems and if your not working/in a decent financial position your back to taking the bus anyways....I doubt this eg would cause you any problems as Ive been driving it daily the last 3 months and Ive had no problems....but again its a used older car so I cant guarantee anything

Id just wait until you get all your ducks in a row.

This EG will still be around whenever you may or may not want it.....Im not actively selling it anymore.....Im just saving up for another car while driving this.....so Id just wait it out.....I will also say that if you come to me in say March or April ill let it go for a slightly lower price.....My ultimate plan has always been to drive it this winter then next spring sell it and get a set of coilovers for the x8

Really? Something was fucked on your car dude. I get upset if I dont get over 600 on a tank. Most of that being city.

Ohhh i dont doubt that the cb was in dire need of some attention.....but my point is its gonna be substantially cheaper to run the civic than the accord....getting 600 from each car is alright....but the fact mine has 20 less liters makes it awesome.

It costs me roughly 70 bucks a month in gas to run the civic.....Pretty much fill it up every 2 weeks give or take a few days.....Since I live in Toronto I really only drive to and from work as the city traffic pisses me off....but its still roughly 50km round trip

There arent many cars that will get better mpg than a civic hatch.

Who are some good insurance providers? I'm thinking about making my Fiance the one and only driver on the Civic if/when we get that because I hear women have lower rates.

Im with dominion of canada.....paying 135 a month liability only....with 2 tickets tho.

Just go to some local insurance brokers and they will give you the best rate through one of the companies they use.....thats how I got dominion (which i had never heard of prior).

Women do pay considerably lower insurance.....For example my sister pays 75 a month full coverage on a 00 civic.....She only has her G2 as well and Ive had my G since 2005.....The rules here are bull shit.....but if your gonna be driving it your gonna have to be an occasional driver....so that would raise the rates a bit.

Honestly tho if your over 25 and have had insurance for more than 5 years with a clean record insurance for guys here isnt that bad.
