if its sunny bring lots of cold water, i almost lost it once working a slalom by myself. get lots of rides from peoples too, like fizzbob7 said, they are really nice people, not like when you go drag racing where everyone is so stuck on themselves

yeah, try and get laps with others that are close to the top. They will show you whats up. Just dont try to do what they did as fast as they did. you will work you way up. first time, just go at a comfortable speed to get to know the track, and how the cones are set up. Then you can go faster after that. See where the better guys brake, turn accelerate and things like that. But just have fun. Dont get stressed out either. the first time you will prolly have butterflies.. but after that you just wanna do it again and again.
      good luck though...its addicting.

Make sure to do a walk through with someone who knows the course. A walk through is basically when you walk the course and learn how it is set up. I hope that the group also does a drive through which is the same as the walk through but you are driving and getting the feel for the course.
Like everyone else said, ride along with some people. They will give you some tips on how to take the corners. At least on your first run have someone who knows the course ride with you and help you figure out the course.
When you start get the revs up before launching to get a little better start.
Don't be jerky with the steering wheel. Smoother is faster!!! Roll into the turns and roll out of the turns, not jerk into and out of.
Don't pull the e-brake if you get scared. A guy did this at a race I was at and slid out of the last turn, ran over the timing box that was just built the day before and almost hit the program tent. I was standing next to the tent and was like. I was about to dive out of the way. Needless to say they were pissed at the guy and gave him a big talking to.
Anyway, not tryin' to scare ya just trying to give you some tips. I am by no means an expert. I have learned a lot though. The guys at these races have taught me a lot of things. Just listen to people and try to get better at it.
