    Raced a new GTI

I'm pretty sure that's what it was...

I must say, that thing sounded sick! Had a nice growl to it for a turbo car.

I saw the guy pull out of a side street and take off. He had a cavalier behind him, so I thought they may be together... I didn't follow until I saw the VW pull away. I caught up to him at a redlight. He was on the line, I was right behind. I suppose he saw me fly up behind (or he was just playing with his new toy... still had temp tags on it) because he took off pretty good. I pulled into the lane next to him as soon as I safely passed the car next to me, and hung with him until about 90 or so... then I backed off.

He slowed down a bit, and I pulled up next to him and gave a thumbs up. He smiled back, and I realized I wasn't racing some toughguy asshole. So I kept it going. We stuck together side by side for a while, trying to catch a light. Why is it when you WANT a redlight, you never get one? We drove a good distance looking for lights... no luck.

I got next to him at about 50, with nobody around... revved my engine a couple times until I heard him spool, then I dropped to 3rd and we were off. Took it to around 90 again. I pulled on him early in the gears, kept up with him later on, and he started to pull away at the top of my 4th gear. I backed off as he started to pull, so I really don't know if I could've caught up or overtaken him had I continued.

I pulled into the parking lot of a Wawa, and tried to get him to follow. He just honked and went on his way. No time to chat, I suppose He must've turned around shortly after, because I'm pretty sure he passed me again going the other way.

All in all, it was a good race. I was impressed both with the GTI, and with my ability to keep up with it. I'd love to get next to one on the track someday!

I hate the guys that take offense to a little competition. I think it's cool that my 14 year old NA sedan kept up with his brand new turbo sport compact... And on his end, it's cool that his completely stock GTI kept up with my fairly modified car.

I should've kept going, especially since he was also way past his turn (so I wasn't just going his way... we were both going out of our way to race...) I'm overdue for an oil change though, and I have a feeling I need to inspect my front suspension. I'm also in need of a valve adjustment! I was getting a bit uneasy pushing it so hard...

I love the new GTI. Plaid seats! I want a black one.
That story sounds about right. They can run slightly under a 15s 1/4 and they have like zero turbo lag with 207 lbft from 1800rpm on up. It runs with a 10.3 comp ratio. Wonder if he had the DSG. whap whap, and you're gone.

The hardest part about a new car is having to break it in...

I kinda feel bad that he was beating on his brand new car... definitely NOT broken in yet!

They really have a 10.3? That's interesting. Damn near my compression ratio!

Yea they can run higher compression with the direct injection system. I know Audi's V6 runs like a 12.5:1 CR...

Sounds good though man. Those GTI's are pretty nice...I'd get one if I had the money. There's a really nice dropped all white one on h22sparkle's block.

Yes. Look for more direct injection in the very near future. Most of the direct injection systems have a centrally located spark plug and an offset fuel injector. This includes Audi/VW's system, Toyota/Lexus and most of the other currently on the market. Ideally, you would have central injection from a central location (where the plug typically is) to allow for a more even fuel air mixture in the combustion chamber, which allows for higher compression still.

Guess what? Honda has perfected central direct fuel injection on one of their engines (can't remember if it was an actual production European engine, or if it was a mule in a European Accord I think...) which allowed compression somewhere in the order of 13+:1...

I imagine it will start appearing on their next generation of engines along with the new VTEC system that they are working on. I suspect that this will at least be an infinitely variable system similar to Valvetronic if not a complete solenoid based system.

Perhaps it will be a leap in technology similar to the original DOHC VTEC in the early 90's.

That would be good for the consumer...

And I agree, those new 2.0 DSI's have a very cool growl to them. I heard one pass me the other day.

And don't worry about him flogging it Deev...it is his car. It is really hard to bite down and not get on a brand new car for the first 1,000 miles or so...you just have to keep telling yourself that it is for the long term interest of the car.

^^^I'm so pissed there's basically no way we can retrofit a direct injection system on our motors. A streetable 13:1 compression ratio would do wonders for an all-motor F22. It will definitely be a technology that will become more prevalent in the future, assuming they figure out a way to maximize valve area while utilizing the system. I wonder where the injectors are...in the head basically? That's intense. If they could create a system that could maintain atomization pressure across a line, rather than having the injectors mixed in with the valvetrain, they'd be golden. It's exciting technology nonetheless.

                      I think the 2.0L is a 5 cylinder.

If I ever get a new car, I think I'm going to just take it on a few VERY long trips... get that break-in period over with!

naw the gti motor is a 2.0l turbo. The 5 cylinder is the base motor.

Good job keeping with him deev.
I usually pull on those all the way to over 100 and then we stay even. But if I'm juicing..... well 10-12 cars maybe? from dead stop to 125mph. From a 50 roll I pull 6-7 cars on them easy.
In fact I've beat up every GTI that races in my town. None of them even race me anymore.

lol thats cause I haven't raced anything thats faster yet. And I have lost once. To a stage 3 srt-4 that runs 12s with the right driver driving it. I run 14.4 @102 at the track with my G-tech saying the exact same numbers ( I love that thing). This is with a shitty ass launch and the clutch slipping in every gear including 4th. On the street the G-tech got me at 13.9@104mph with the same bad clutch but instead of a 2.6 60 foot I ran 2.2 with still a bad launch. From a 50 roll I've kept up with every corvette (non z06 and non c6), trans am GT0 I've raced. Its pretty quick for the streets around here but I'd be screw if I was in a place where people actually dump money into there cars.
Theres a few cars that can beat me around here... In fact alot of cars. I just can't never find them when I'm out prowling the streets.
