anything is possible when it comes to a race, but if a standard cb7 and a auto cb7 with the same mods, the standard will win if the driver is good. but just like everyone else said DO NOT shift your auto mannualy. If you do this for to long i can promise you your tranny will go out. it happend to mine, i did it b/c i was going to go standard so i decide i would fry my auto tranny by doing stupid shit like down shifting on it and punching it. It only lasted 2 months before it went out and when it did i lost all my gears except neutral.

It's not good for the tranny to be manually shifted. Everyone I know that has done it has actually had better results letting the auto do it's thing on the track (I believe ATX's 16.3 was done without manual shifting) It may or may not kill the transmission in a short time, depending on the condition of it in the first place. Still, when you shift it manually, you're making the torque converter work a LOT harder than it was designed to. Basically, you're shifting as if you had a clutch, without having a clutch. The auto tranny keeps the motor continuously under load, which means there is no "disengaged" point as there is when you have the clutch in on a manual transmission. That means instead of going "gear, nothing, gear, nothing, gear" like a manual, it's "gear, gear, gear, gear"... those mechanical parts are taking that beating with every shift.
Somone correct me if I'm wrong... I'm not claiming to be an automatic transmission specialist!

You're 100% right deever, thta's pretty much what's happening. You're also forcing the tps to be doing things it shouldn't, which I believe in turn will confuses the hell out of your ecu, hence, not delivering actually enough fuel when it's suppose to. Also, I know it "feels" faster when shifting your auto, or any auto for that matter, but truth it, it isn't. For you to outshift your auto tranny, you would have to be dead on accurate with exactly where you are shifting. Lastly, most auto's with similar mods can not keep up with standards, this doesn't mean all can't, there certainly been cars to prove that wrong.

Once you get up to speed I'm not really sure auto/manual matters, especially in our cars. I mean 5th gear on the 5spd is probably as tall or taller than OD on the automatic, and automatics usually have very, very, very tall OD gears. Now swap in the H22 box and it's a different story...

All in all not just off the line I would have to recommend a 5-speed for racing. I say this because with a 5-speed you have more control of the car. Effective clutch braking, crontrol of rpm's, all around handling of the cars speed. Your tranny computer can not perdict any situation that you might be in. It can only do what it's programmed to do. I use to be really stubborn about learning how to drive stick when I was young, but after I learned I could'nt go back. Auto tranny's feel dangerous to me. I don't feel like I have enough control of the car. I will drive my auto suv around, but would I take a auto car to high speeds? nope.

so it all comes around to a well known proven fact....WHEN YOU GO FAST SHIT BREAKS...no its not good for you to shift your auto..but hell your gonna tear your car up racing anyways right ..i used to manually shift my auto all the time..kinda nice to bark second in an automatic, but any ways i tore one tranny up 4000 miles after replacing the engine...but what the hell it was fun...but at the track i did see bettere times letteing the tcu control the shiftsLast edited by IBCNYA; 06-24-2005, 01:44 PM.

No doubt manual shifting is more fun... auto "feels" slower than it really is. I mean, an automatic transmission is NOT the best thing for racing, but it does the trick. There is definitely a trick to using the gas pedal though. My girl can make her little Civic fly, but I can't make it move at all! You have to know how hard to press. Flooring it doesn't cut it.
The one thing I DO like about automatic is that a well maintained auto is a KILLER in bracket racing. If you know how to drive it, a few runs will tell you your time... you can kick ass by being able to run the same time over and over again. I almost got an auto for my second car for that reason. If the DX I found was auto, I still probably would've bought it.

I have a F22A6 with 169,275 miles on the engine. It's been sitting for Two and a half months after my accident. When I get in fixed, I want to add some headers, exhaust, and some other goodies, but I don't know if my engine will last that long. The car's been good to me since I bought it last year, never gave me any problems, very dependable for a 14 year old car. I drove the car real hard after I got my license, running the car in the 5-6 rpm mark on straight roads. I don't know if my engine can any hard pressure after my accident.

And Mick, manual shifting the H22 tranny is no better than manually shifting the F22 tranny. It kills ANYTHING that wasn't made for it. Also, before someone throws it in there... the F and H transmissions are really about equal in strength. People seem to think that the F transmission is weak. (Accord SiR is holding over 400hp on an F22B1 tranny)
