The GTI still has the torque advantage over the H22, and it reaches it's max power earlier in the RPM range. Not saying it isn't possible, but if the drivers are equal, the GTI should win. So yeah, it's down to the drivers. The H22 is still the underdog regardless.

I beleive that a stock cb7 h22 swap will beat a stock 1.8t all day long, even with equally professional drivers. The h22 is NOT the underdog, sure it might make less torque and take longer to reach the peak but can the 1.8 hold high power all the way to 8000 RPM? dont think so. Ever wonder why the DOHC VTEC honda motors run so good and are soo fast for just all motor 4 bangers? Because they can produce high power at high rpm consistently. they have good powerband. The 1.8t will build power sooner, but it also dies off way quicker, while the honda is still in the meat of the band going all the way to 8K.
