    ran old school gto

Okay last run was 2 days ago. I was casually crusin along when i noticed another blue car didnt pay no mind to it until i saw it was an oldschool muscle car. I was lookin at it was nice. So then i looked it was this dude with his girl. im like nice, nice the light turned green he peeled out. I went to chase up after him.

And i noticed my car was pullin slow. I was like wtf is something wrong and i had totally forgot my boost was turned down i was likw wtf.

And we got up to the light and i realized the dial-a-boost switch was on 0 i usually leave it on 3. I put it up to the three and asked the guy of the gto to run it back.

He said okay so i turned the boost up and put the high octane mode switch on. And ran him I fuckin left him by 3 cars.

I ran him 6 times and for the last 3 i noticed everytime i run him past 80 its like he cuts it short. So i slowdown and asked him why you slowin down for.

He says well that the thing my car only goes up to 85 im like damn are you serious. so thats it everytime i pulled on him but his car has very good downlow traction though. can anyone really confirm that those gto's actually do 85 tops or was he just dickin with me. Because back then in the 50'60's 85 must have been considered fast.

A lot of the time, the older muscle cars have a gearing that's meant for more low end power. 3:73 and 4:11 are common rear differential ratios for that era. 3:73 was better for highway, and 4:11 (I think 4:10 as well, can't remember for sure) were more like what trucks have. Our 94 Chevy truck topped out at about 90+.

If you run into a muscle car that's set up for pro-touring, however, don't expect the same results. They tend to swap out the original (archaic) drivetrain with newer (Corvette, Firebird, Mustang, etc) equipment, and you're dealing with a lot newer technology. They also tend to replace panels with fiberglass, even carbon fiber, aluminum blocks, even swapping out suspension components.

Here's a top speed calculator you can throw in there to see about how fast they'll go with different gearing ratios.

GTOs in the late 60's weighed around 3500lbs. Convertibles were heavier. Figuring in the larger engines might add a bit to the weight. The 70 GTOs were on the high side of 3600 lbs.

My dad has a 66 GTO and he can easily hit higher than 85. I don't know what rear end he is running but when I was like 13 and he was racing a 67 Cougar w/ a 351 (windsor) on the freeway. Cougar thought he was pretty tough shit till my dad ran about 3 cars on him. He had the speedo PEGGED and it reads to 120.

He probably backed off when you started pulling hard to lessen the pain of his ego.

You also have to remember sparkle, you are pretty well modded. So it wasn't REALLY a fair run. You should take off all your stage 3 crap and run him stock and see what happens. I bet you wouldn't run him by as many.

      Nice kill though.

Damn my mom used to pick on people in her 70 Cougar with 351C. Cougars have a pretty light ass end on them and are notorious for traction problems from the line. Everytime my mom gently left a stop light it would spin just a little bit. And it aint no way a GTO tops out at 85 unless it had a truck ass end in it that was like made for muddin.

I'm willing to bet you either ran up against some idiot with serious car problems or you found a 6 cylinder LeMans with GTO badging on it. I had a 70 LeMans with the Pontiac 60 degree 350 v8 (back then GM didn't use the same block for all cars, the Pony 350 was different than the Chevy 350). It definitely didn't stop at 85. She was built a little, but even with the two barrel I ran on the streets she was a low 13 second car and would go way past the 140 mark on the speedometer. I don't recommend hitting 150 on the freeway with a flinchy passenger.
