    after 80 mph...

    Hey guys,,

Was on the highway and i notice after 80 mph the rpm steady at around 4k at full throttle (gas pedal all the way down) and it take some time to hit like 90 or 100. Is there like a governor on this? Car is a 1997 accord! Don't flame me on the year, you guys are smarter on this forum

    Thanks

Basically im guessing after 80 its 5th gear therefore it would not reach anything about 5k rpm while in this gear?

The car is not a race car. These Accords are slow. They're also geared for economical highway driving. It doesn't have any guts up there because it wasn't designed to. You need extensive modifications to make this car perform well on an 80-100mph run.

The only reason I'm leaving this thread up is because it could just as easily apply to the CB7.
My Members' Ride Thread - It's a marathon build, not a sprint. But keep me honest on the update frequency!

Please try, try I say, to keep it within the speed limits on public roads.

So many things can go wrong.

The fact that you think Accords have a governor tells me you probably don't know the condition of your tires which means if you have a blow out at 90+, you are dead along with any innocent people cruising in the vicinity.

The guys here are pretty cool about us CD5'rs hanging around. I don;'t have a cb7 either but i like being on this forum as theres a lot in common with cb7 and cd5's. also this board is active.

          Is yours an automatic?

My accord goes balls out at 80, it only gets harder to accelerate past 110.I have a 97EX 5spd(f22b1). with 120k on the engine. I've had it to 140, and no GOV at all.

Poor maintainence can result in clogged exhaust due to oil leaks, and poor piston seal because of gummed up rings.

For the record there are many states that have 75mph speed limits so doing 80-90 doesn't seem that insane. Its no different than doing 65 in a 55 as far as the law goes.

Um if its manual you need to downshift, if its an auto itll downshift. If you have your pedal to the floor somethings not right. If its a manual yeah itll take a second for it to speed up in 5th..the revs will climb with the speed.. sounds like your cars just messed up or youre a new driver.

Why do people always think the beginner forums are the proper place to dump their non-CB7-related shit?

The maximum speed limit anywhere in the US is 75mph. There is no reason why you should be going faster than that.

They actually upped it to 80? Well then.
OP, don't go any faster than 80.

Any limiter will be well over 100. You should NEVER reach the limiter in a car this old. Chances are, your tires aren't even capable of handling such speeds, let alone your suspension and brakes...

This is what I use to determine top speed of any vehicle. What's it matter if your car can do 200mph, if your tires are only h rated? I had v rated tires on that day. Straight stretch for 6 miles, at 4am. There are some tracks you can race on and drag strips to go to where 80is would be easy to surpass deev

OP: Braking hard at high speeds in a car that's not all that aerodynamic, is pretty scary. 100+mph emergency braking in accords isn't my idea of fun. If you feel you must wind out your car off the track FFS do so in an area no one else is remotely going to get in front of you.

The stretch of highway I was on has no on/offramps for those 6 miles.

Any drag strip will see an Accord hitting over 80mph for seconds. If that.
Any road course would require safety inspections and proper equipment.

But yes, the limit of any vehicle is always the weakest link. In this case, tires, brakes, suspension... driver... roads...

My favorite place to race is upper this 1/2 mile long hill 4lanes wide with only 3 painted on it. 2 lanes up, 1 down. The only thing that sucks is that the bridge right before the hill isn't 3 lanes wide. So you have to go through the light at the bottom stop, signal and go.

Its the only road I feel safe racing on. Unless I drive to the industrial park area in Kentucky.

Even at 2 am on that 6 mile stretch of interstate, I don't feel comfortable being stopped in the middle of the road.
