My ex has given her crappy Neon to my two oldest ones, but it's got some problems (which is good, I believe you should work on them before you can drive them). Most of it I can find and teach them to diagnose and make them fix, but there's an odd noise I'm not familiar with. It's in this video, mostly audible at idle speed, but I revved it a little for comparison. It's pretty clear in the last few seconds of the video, a kind of clapping sound, cyclical, but not quite in time with the motor.
My brother said it sounds like piston slap to him, but to me it sounds more external, ot muffled by the block. It sounds like metal to metal contact, but it's not rod knock or a spun bearing (at least it doesn't sound like any I've heard (*cough*caused) before.
I can't physically see anything happening that would make the noise.
And I know it sounds like a sewing machine making love to a lawnmower, it's a Neon.
If it's something internal with the motor, I'm probably going to advise them to sell the damn thing on CL for whatever they can get. lol
