    F22Chris : 2001 Subaru Outback

Got an H4(EJ253) Outback with 198k for $500.

Not planning on keeping it much longer, as my wife wants to sell it and get an 06 XB. I just wanted to share the experience.

    The bad:
    Trunk struts are blown
    Misfire
    Needs front tires
    Front fog is cracked
    Front row cover is missing
    Milky self adjusting rear view

Other than that just basic stuff. I'm in the process of doing balljoints, tie rods, and cv axles so I can get tires and an alignment.

The car was up north for a few, so these lower balljoints were seized. The pinch bolts are not budging as well. So I drilled them out and put a 10.8 in there.

I also am rebuilding the axles cause they're OEM. Got one done, working on the other.

Also picked up some trunk struts, fixed the misfire, changed oil, transmissions filter & fluid service, polished the headlights, and got another tow hook cover. I'll post pics of the car soon.

An '01 should be an EJ251. Is yours stamped with "EJ253" on the block? That's the engine that came in the N/A versions of the following generations' Legacy/Outback (among other models).

I like the rear suspension on these compared to the BK-model Legacy wagon my girlfriend has. They did away with the rear MacPherson strut in favor of a multilink and added an LSD rear differential.

Does this one have two sunroofs?
My Members' Ride Thread - It's a marathon build, not a sprint. But keep me honest on the update frequency!

Nah just a base model. And yeah it's a 251, I got my generations mixed up. They're in 3rd gens. This is the low compression one. I think the 253's have a 10:0.1 and the 251's are 8:0.1.

I want to get an 03 Legacy Sedan because I love the body style on those. That or a 99 Forester and do an XT swap. All I know is that I want an AWD turbo.

My dad has this car...It leaked oil and had a slight headgasket issue, but other than that I like it. The gates on the shifter feel like you're walking across a hallway though.

These are absolute hell to get out of it's been above the rust belt.

Never. Again. Respect to all of you guys/girls/technicians doing work in those areas.

Mine doesn't leak from the head gasket at all. I did notice some drips from the lower water outlet. Easy enough fix. I also need to go by Subaru to get some of that coolant conditioner. Everything is pretty much done, just gotta set toe and adjust camber.

I got the trunk struts on. I think the latch staying open on its own is my favorite part. No more vise grip on the strut!

Ordered camber bolts and inner tie rods/boots. Alignment people are super picky so I just don't want them to have any small reason to not align this thing. Will post work when parts arrive.

Edit: parts came. Gotta love rock auto.

Got inner tie rods in. Didn't document it as the driver boot was like trying to put a condom on a pumpkin. It pissed me right the fu*k off. On top of that, the rental inner rod tool was perfect for the passenger side, but too small for the driver; I had to take a grinding stone to it.

Alignment is better. Set toe with string and maxed out caster as there is wire showing on inner tires.

I still have a popping sound when turning and going over bumps on the passenger side. Have to check strut mounts and end links. Hopefully not the new balljoints in there.

Beck & Arnley make decent parts too. Old left rod was so bad it wouldn't hold itself up without the outer rod on. Like, lift it and drop it, and it would bounce all over with its own weight.

Regardless the steering is way better, and the steering wheel is mostly straight. String trick with jacks and a tape measure works decently! Now I just have to do the timing belt and align it at school! So close.

So the popping noise is the balljoint on the passenger side. The joint is fine, but the pinch isn't tightening over it. I broke 3 nuts 8 grade, and bent one 9.8. I got some 10.9 nuts and bolts to try again tomorrow. If not, I'll have to press it or get a new knuckle. Both of which I really don't want to do, but are cheaper than tower mounts. I'll make sure to take pics.

Tie rods done. Also got the pinch to hold, so I don't have to get another knuckle. Good day today, weather is getting colder too so I'm excited to get shit done without dying of heat.

And the newest edition to the family. 1.8L 8v 86 Scirocco.

Yeah. The green and darker red are super common. The GT's are solid colors.
