VTEC Powered Classic Minis: 0-60 in Five Seconds
GoMini in Atlanta offers VTEC conversions for classic saloon and clubman style Minis. Their extensive mods include engine installation and a custom-built subframe, plus Rover K-Series steering and brake components. The exhaust is a hybrid of Honda's standard down pipes and a Mini sport muffler, featuring a "subdued but purposeful tone." Sounds like a description off a wine bottle, doesn't it?
The Mini Tec-B Series VTEC Conversion front subframe is manufactured in-house and enables installation of various Honda VTEC drive trains while allowing easy maintenance. You can also use standard Mini wheels, since the front wheel track dimensions stay unchanged. The end result is a little screamer that puts out over 175 bhp and is capable of hitting 135 mph (217 kph). Not bad for a former econobox. Complete turnkey cars are available from $19,900.
If you don't have $20G burning a hole in your pocket, you can always opt for one of their vintage Classic Minis, or you could purchase the one my neighbor has for sale -- although it reportedly needs a little work.
Honda VTEC powered Classic Minis (thanks, Martin!)
