1993 ford taurus LX wagon....seriously, i love it

ok, a month ago the 95 4runner i was driving spun a rod bearing and i had to have something asap. for $400, i picked up a 93 taurus lx wagon in decent shape aesthetically but needed a bit of work and after a quick lookover and from what i was told, it needed a battery to drive home that day (jumped it off and drove it to the parts store 23 miles away without a battery lol). had a bad motor mount that is only noticeable in reverse so no big deal and it shifted a bit off at times, but not bad either.

then, after i paid for it, i realized that the sunroof had been mangled and had a hole where a handle bolt cover should be and of course it was about to rain, so i through an old decal over it and to this day, it's still leak-proof

but also, the front and back driver windows don't roll down, the blinkers didn't work, no radio, no a/c and one of the 4 headlight beams work (one high beam)

well, i've had about 2 hours to deal with it, so i literally had to yank the dash and rewire the car from the firewall back to fix the blinkers. someone had tapped into the ignition wires to wire up a radio and they burned up 5 wires that controlled most of the accessories. i got it all working and the a/c even worked great after a recharge, although the clutch went out on the compressor the other day when it was 92 degrees, but nice for a couple of weeks. the rest of the system is fine.

my blinkers work and when i fixed everything, the wiper relay somehow got shorted out and i haven't found time to get a used one (new ones don't exist through ford or other places and the part number checks out as a door chime) so it's permanently on and wired through a toggle switch just in case it rains (we're in the middle of a drought right now and it's not hot and dry yet).

no radio but i haven't hooked one up and don't really care. when you have to roll your windows down (the 2 that work) and haul ass everywhere, it's loud.

i still have a few little things to fix but it's actually doing fine and the 3.8 is strong. 140hp and around 215ft/lb torque so it will run better than the 4-runner easily and if you haul ass down the interstate doing 85-90mph, you get about 22-24mpg (only 15 around town thanks to the tranny). i was getting 12 with the 4 runner and it was SLOW. 240,000 miles and most of them abused, so ehh.

but the coolest fucking thing, i found that it has a picnic table and 3rd row seat in the "trunk" area as options. the little 2 person fold up seat has belts and stows away where the spare tire area is, just a bit more forward of it though and the back part of that area has a fold out picnic table about 2'x4' and is actually very fucking handy and perfect for practical use (tailgating or camping). my big-ass canoe fits nicely on top as well.

but for about $475 total, i've got a decent car and oddly enough, i'm getting that bug again. i haven't wanted to mess with cars for a long time but now, i'm probably gonna buy a 3.2 taurus SHO from a junkyard and swap that engine and tranny into the wagon (later) but just fix everything else in the process and then convert a few interior pieces into SHO standard shit. front buckets instead of the bench, gauge cluster, put the SHO console in it, etc.

it's a loaded version (literally has every option ford offered for the taurus) so it has 4-wheel disc, the cool ass rear facing seat (i always wanted one of the old station wagons like what chevy chase had in national lampoon's movies), and tons of space and with a modified yamaha 3.2 SHO engine (very tough engines), a 300hp/300tq wagon is very doable and i have TONS of old ford parts (a lot of svo/svt stuff from 'stangs, contours, cobras, and the SHO)

still looking to buy a home this summer and then i'll have a place to play with the car and my wife is getting a new car later this year so i'll have the civic hb to drive.

i know of only one other SHO-spec wagon and not sure if he has it anymore. definitely a project i can get excited about

I think you can swap an Explorer OHC into one of those, not too sure though. I did that mod in my truck and damn it comes in real handy sometimes.

And I also think you can do the EATC mod (EATC stands for Electronic Air Temperature Control) usually found on the Eddie Baurer Explorers (96-00) as well.

Although I'm kinda positive the SHO wagons do exist but they are very very rare.

you can swap about anything into anything. ford is just as easily "cross-platform compatible" as honda. i started out modding fords and built my first engine (first one i built without any help at all) when i was 14 and by the time i was 16 and able to drive, i had a lot of experience with fords. my merkur xr4ti had the 2.3 ranger roller cam, turbo coupe ecu and air meter, svo 2.3 mustang big-valve head, svt contour front brakes, etc, etc. i've been messing with fords for years.

comparing the explorer ohc engine (just average) to the yamaha 3.0 or 3.2 from the early/mid 90's taurus SHO (bulletproof) is like comparing the c-series motors from the nsx to the d15b7; not a lot to compare really. the yamaha engine put out around 215/220 stock and was supposedly good to go on stock internals up to 700hp (a lot just slap on superchargers or turbos and make a simple, quick, daily driveable 400hp and call it a day)......and no, there was no taurus SHO wagon with a v6 in it (not sure if the newer v8 SHOs came in wagon form, but they weren't the same type of car at all)

i've known guys with hopped up explorers and they were all smart and swapped up to the v8's from the cobra/mark viii or at least the 4.6 from the late 90's mustang gt, and the older explorers usually just borrowed the old fox body stang's 5.0. truck engines are simply designed differently than other engines. the cam profiles are different, the valve seat angles are different, they handle heat differently, designed to put up with different abuse, etc.

3.8 is a regular car engine and the 3.0 and 3.2 SHO engines (yamaha built them for ford for another project but they weren't used, so ford stuck them in the taurus SHO) are the high performance version. stock, they're nothing special (pretty to look at) but they're very capable and they can move ridiculous amounts of air so when boosted, they really respond. you could throw a t4, exhaust, intercooler and some generic fuel management on it and get 300hp easily.

is the h23 better than the h22?

I meant the OHC (Over Head Console) sorry.

I know you definitely swap a v8 into a ranger but with a 4wd ranger it does take a lot of work.

i've seen a lot of hack jobs as far as v8 swaps into small trucks. one guy had to buy 2 used tires every 10-14 days because the camber was so bad it would just squeal going down the road

I was just poking around in a junkyard down in Phoenix not too long ago.

They had 2 SHO's there. One looked fairly beat, and the other was rearended, so the engine was fine. Everything was there, and it looked to be in good shape.

If I would have had the cash, I would have picked it up...probably would have made a pretty bad ass sandrail or something.

to whoever asked about the SHO wagon, they sadly dont exist. there was only one ever made by Ford for show purposes. if they had sold more SHO's, then it would have been produced but SHO sales started to decline so the wagon idea was scrapped.

also, ive heard that those engines are hard to find parts for since they were in low production. o well, id love to see a nice looking SHO hybrid so i say go for it. good luck with the project.

around this area, they're not too hard to find. i know of a few within 4 hours of the house too. one guy is selling a good engine with wiring and ecu, etc, for $350 or the whole care (in great shape, but no title) for $1200.......the local junkyard has a nice red '95 that i'd like to get but not sure on the engine (running or not) but rebuilding would be wise anyway.

they are around though. there were something like 9000 of them made in the USA which isnt' bad
