Rust issues with Honda and Acura

Around here, it seems a large percentage of Hondas and Acuras are rusting in the usual location. This is preventing me to buy another Honda\Acura as a replacement for my cb7 which is considered a total loss. I can't bear with a rusty car after the cb7 got badly rusted.

Why do Hondas rust more than other cars like Toyotas.

If you know how to maintain it it should be fine. Washing it to get off the road salt helps. Most people are just lazy and neglect it till the last moment. WHenever it snowed here I washed my car every week or two.

Honda's rust faster than Toyota's because of the sheet metal used to make the cars. It all depends on the owner when it comes to preventing rust. If you are meticulous with your cars appearance in terms of washing and waxing then you can take control and keep the rust off your car. Maintenance is the key to preventing rust.

There's a shelf on the rear wheel well that holds water.

Basically, the rust process starts from the inside and works its way out ? The visible rust is just a fraction then. I don't think my next car will be a Honda.

Absolutely. If the car is constantly cleaned and stored in a garage all its life and doesn't see much road salt, it will be fine...if not it will probably rust.




As you can see, there's much more rust underneath than what you can see.

Do the 6th generation Accords have rust issues? I haven't seen one yet.

All cars eventually have rust issues.

Don't forget that the newest CB7 is 14 years old.

If you think Hondas are bad, you should check out some domestics.

My aunt had a Buick Skylark, that at the age my car is now, litterally had entire chuncks of car missing.

A little wheelwell rust in comparison isn't that bad.

Mostly, it is in the way the metal is treated. They are constantly trying to innovate new alloys coatings and finishes that keep the rust to a minimum.

Honda did drop the ball a little bit with the little lip that is there, but if you get up in there with a powerwasher and flush the salty water away, that will help out a lot.

Also, keeping the underchassis clean helps too.

In a place with lots of salt on the road or in the air, washing underneath the car is just as important as washing the body of the car.

Especially in places like Hawaii.

My sister's Corolla is 100X worse then both of my Accords, the mechanic said he had a hard time lifting it because almost everywhere was rotted out on the bottom. It all depends on who actually looked after their cars beforehand. But, Honda is worse because of that little lip, as well as a lot of people when they wash their cars only wash the outer parts and not the wheel wells.

Yeah, but they don't rust as bad as a lot of other cars.

That is my point.

And yes, I know that once it appears it is too late, but at least you don't have a 14-17 year old car that is litterally falling apart at the frame rails and stuff, when you move it.

In that region of the country EVERY car will rust eventually.

It isn't like 5 years after it is built it is rusting to crap.

It is more like 10-15, and even then it looks about like the pictures above AW's car.

Some cars at that age are falling apart from rust.

If you pick a car based on whether or not it will ever rust, you only option is something 100% composite (fiberglass or carbon fiber) or a DeLorean.
