get a 91-93 240sx. they're easily available for less than 5k. RWD, huge aftermarket support, great platform to modify, great power potential whether you choose an SR20 () or a KA-T (). the KA block is really pretty strong (15psi on a stock block with just pistons).

i only paid 1k for mine, and its fairly loaded, and its in great shape.

you could buy a really nice e30 or e36 bmw for that price i paid 3800 for my 318i with 18's and i just picked up my 86 325e 5 speed for 2400.00 both are great fun cars and both are rear wheel drive and of course are bmw's,if you know how to do a lot of your own repairs like i do then the maintenance isnt bad and insurance hasnt been bad either mine was the same as my accord.i would definitely look into them if you can.
