    2008 Accord Coupe NAIAS

DETROIT, Jan. 8, 2007 – The Honda Accord Coupe Concept reveals a totally new look for the next-generation Accord, along with key technologies for safety, fuel efficiency and performance, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced today at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. The Accord is Honda’s best-selling model in North America and its debut at NAIAS marks the first time that an Accord concept vehicle has ever been shown at a major auto show.

The styling of the Accord Coupe Concept conveys a powerful stance through its long hood, deeply sculpted lower body and fastback roofline. A six-sided grille and projector headlamps that recess deep into the front fenders contribute to an unmistakable and aggressive front fascia. Quad exhaust outlets integrated into the rear diffuser further convey performance and style beyond any Accord to date.

“The Accord Coupe Concept demonstrates the styling direction for the upcoming, eighth-generation Accord,” said John Mendel, senior vice president of American Honda. “As the industry’s target for midsize segment excellence, the all-new Accord will set a new benchmark for safety, efficiency, performance, refinement and style.”

A more powerful and lower-emissions V6 engine will provide higher fuel efficiency with the incorporation of Honda’s next-generation Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) technology. Honda leads the industry with the highest Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) rating for any full line manufacturer of 29.2 miles per gallon - well above the industry average of 25.3 miles per gallon.

As part of Honda’s “Safety for Everyone” initiative, all next-generation Accord models will include the company’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) Body Structure. Honda’s ACE Body Structure incorporates a front-end frame structure that helps absorb and disperse crash energy over a large area in a frontal impact. ACE also makes the vehicle more crash compatible in frontal impacts with vehicles of differing ride heights.

The current generations of the Odyssey (2005), Civic (2006) and CR-V (2007) all have the ACE Body Structure. Together, the ACE-equipped vehicles represent more than 50 percent of all 2007 Honda vehicles sold on a sales-weighted basis. With the addition of the next-generation Accord to the lineup of vehicles with ACE, more than 75 percent will be equipped with the technology on a sales-weighted basis after it goes on sale.

    Honda Accord History
The Honda Accord, currently in its seventh generation in 30 years, remains Honda’s best-selling vehicle worldwide and has consistently been one of the top five best-selling automobiles in the U.S. Known for its ride and handling, comfort and convenience features, safety, quality and refinement, the Accord delivers world-class style with sophistication and performance. The Accord was launched in 1976 with subsequent major re-designs debuting in 1982, 1986, 1990, 1994, 1998 and 2003. More than 9.5 million Accords have been sold in the U.S. since 1976.

Car and Driver magazine named the 2007 Honda Accord as one of the winners of its prestigious and highly competitive annual "10Best Cars" award. The Accord has achieved "10Best" status 21 times in the 25 years that Car and Driver editors have been conducting the competition, more than any other vehicle in the award's history.

wow actually looks alot better than the current 7th Gen

In retrospect the sides look nearly like the lines of a Tiburon/3 Series and the front slightly resembles a Volvo.

    :edit:

Looks almost like a tC from what one poster said on TOV

      MEH,

Dont like the front, reminds me of a truck. Headlights and fog area is nice.

Like the side's, dont like the rims.

Rear is too bland, like the lights and the exhaust.

      Thats my 2 pennies.

I also dont care for the 07 coupe's either, any word whats under the hood?

You have to remember though its a concept, its probably gonna go thru more resdesign stages before it actually makes it into production.

I cant wait to see the sedan, and I wish Honda would bring the Wagon back as well.

That would be an awesome thing if they did.

5th Gen, the wagon line still exists in Europe, Asia and Japan though they did away with it here in the US because of poor sales.

if that comes out...I'm getting one. I'd rather go Honda than get an Audi A4. the only reason I was straying away from Honda was because they have had some ugly cars lately..but this would be awesome.

                              Threads merged for continuity.

I really like the look actually...I can't wait to see the sedan.

The word on powertrain is it could be up to a 3.5L in the V6, and the I4 will most likely be an updated K24, most likely with A-VTEC, and there are rumors of the possibility of a turbo four (probably the K23 from the RDX) being used in some models as well.

I only hope they continue to offer a V6 6speed.

The sedan concept debuts in LA in April. I am sure they will reveal more about powertrain, pricing and feature content at that point.

As far as the styling, it is pretty locked in. Retooling of the factories will probably begin within the next month or so if it hasn't happened all ready. Usually, the retooling takes several months, and then they will have to have several months worth of production to build enough of a backlog to fill demand at the launch.

Some minor elements might change like realistic brakes and wheels, and I could see the quad tips being replaced by either 1) Dual exhaust tips or 2) Quad exhaust tips that are close together like on the TL Type-S.

Just like the Civic Si concept saw minor changes, so too will this one.

Just a couple of interesting Accord points:

                              1) Discounting fleet sales (rental companies, utility companies, etc), the Honda Accord is the best selling car in North America and pretty much has been since the late 1980's. Ford and even Toyota have had to sell to rental fleets to hold the title. Toyota less so than Ford, at least so far. Less than 1 or 2% of all Accords made are sold to fleets.

                              2) Product growth has typically been limited by production capacity. This has been the case since about the beginning of the models history when Honda dealers couldn't keep them in stock in 1978 when they debuted. Even today, certain 2006 models were getting hard to find in June/July.

The vast majority of Accords sold in the US qualify for Domestic car status. Per the government definition, a domestic car is any car which has more than 70% domestic parts content, with final assembly in the United States.

Roughly 85% of all Honda autos/trucks sold in America are built in America.

80% if the CARS sold in America for 2006 were built here.

                              3) The Honda Accord has won Car and Driver's 10best 21 out of the 25 years the award has been given. #2 is the 3 Series, but nothing even comes close.

It has even won 2 of the last 3 comparison tests it has been in for them, and almost won the 3rd as well. That was in the end of its product cycle too.

                              4) Typically Honda's most guarded secret, this is the first time EVER that an Accord concept has debuted prior to its market introduction.
