They look like rims from Brabus. Mercedes have potential. Renntech/Brabus both have made some badass C class mercs. Car looks good though man.

Crumpling like styrofoam is how they were designed. The priority in a crash is to save flesh first and cars second. When the car crumples in a controlled fashion, it is good for the occupants because that means the structure of the car is absorbing the energy instead of the structure of the passengers.
I am not a very big MB fan, but it is hard to argue with their reputation for safety. They actually have teams in Europe whose job is to go to any accident site that an MB is involved in and investigate the crash to learn new ways to make the cars safer. Volvo has similar teams.
Volvo
MB
and Honda are all consistently at or near the top of the safest cars list.

Originally posted by HondaB18Off the top of my head, MB is the first car company to equip their cars with airbags, crumple zones and stability control. I'm sure I am missing a few more important things but MB really focus on its passenger safety. Test drive one, feel the materials its made from, they're real solid cars. It is one of the reason why I got my Benz, that and the cool rear sunshade
They were the first to do those, although Volvo was right in there too. Most of that stuff has debuted on the S-class and then worked its way down the line.
I like the styling of MB, and they are well built, but IMO the materials in the interior are crap for the pricepoint. That covers right up to 2000 or so as those are the newest ones I have dealt with.
I remember driving an $85,000 S class and thinking that if I touched anything in the interior it was going to break... At 1/4 that price point I expect better.
Things like knobs and switches (the early S class rotary knobs for the dual zone temps come to mind, as well as the seat adjuster switches, the mirror adjustment, etc) just didn't feel very solid and connected to the car.
The glove box lids and First aid kit cover felt frail too, as well as the vanity mirrors for the rear seat passengers, and just other general things that are liable to be used alot. I opened the built in cell phone cover on the top of the center console, just above the air vents, and had to negotiate with it to close and not break. I did nothing unusual, so it shouldn't have gotten stuck.
In my mind I am thinking, wow, if they didn't try to make these feel substantial, what other kind of electrical or other miscellaneous things underneath the skin are chintzy? What if the auto door latches that finish pulling the doors closed break?
That and the cheap hard plastics they used. The fit and finish was always very good, but the materials have not impressed me. The carpet and headliner material reminded me of nothing close to "plush" or "luxurious."
That isn't just a knock on MB though, most of the German cars up until recently were like that.
The leather for instance, reminds more of vinyl than it does of soft supple expensive leathers such as you would find in Acuras or Lexuses of the same time period.
I know that most of the MB cars are sold worldwide, and in most parts of the world they see such jobs as TAXI use etc, but for what they are sold and represented as in the US, I was kind of disappointed, especially for the money.
I love their engines though, and the physical chassis are very well built.
I also wasn't fond of the recirculating ball steering setup around town, although it was OK at highway speeds.
For such a large and heavy car (the S class) with Teutonic "driving" pretenses, I thought it was kind of underdamped and required a fair bit of herding around town. I am sure part of that was the steering. Now granted, its primary purpose is occupant comfort, but the magazines would have you believe that they do everything SO much better than everyone else, you get built up to expect this orgasmic driving experience.
The top of the line models seem to be a little more along the lines of what they are represented as (such as top S-class models), but most of what I have seen below that, didn't strike me as much more than a status symbol.
Back to Ray's car, I have seen the car in person, and it definitely has "baller" status. It already looks better than it did, and is coming along quite nicely. The kid who owned it before was a dumbass, so luckily Ray got it when he did, because it was probably going downhill fast.
It isn't my cup of tea, but as long as he is happy with it, then it is all good.
