Volvo had used 4 cylinder engines up through the 70s until the 1979/80 262, which had a VW 6 cylinder. The 2 series after that only had a 4 all the way until its demise after 1993. The 7 series and 9 series both had the 2 series' 2.3l FI inline 4, or an option for a V6. The I5s didn't come along until the 8 series in 1994 or so.
