Srt-4??

Personally, if I had the 12k to spend, I'd look for a WRX (for that price, probably an '02 or so). Also, I'd love an s2k (have a buddy that has one, and all I can say is wow...), but I haven't checked prices on those at all. I agree about some people not wanting a 15 year old car any more, as I'm one of those people, lol. I love my cb7, but there are quite a few little things simply wearing out due to age/mileage that annoy me. I personally wouldn't buy an SRT-4. I never have been a big fan of Dodge/Mopar stuff by any means, and I'm still skeptical of the srt's durability, even with the forged internals and whatnot. Just my opinion though, go with what you want. Oh, and if/when you get the srt, I agree with ditching the yellow for black, or silver, or basically anything less attention-getting. Also, removing the stock wing isn't a bad idea either.

IMO, the SRT-4 is overrated. With bolt ons the new SI will run with it, and easily outhandle it. I understand that you can't afford one of those though, and there aren't any used ones available.
1) A kid with an H22 swap here in his CB beat one by 5 car lengths by 70-80MPH (off the line race). Sure the guy couldn't drive, but as far as the Neon owner was concerned, it shouldn't have even come down to the driver!
2) They are quick, and the engines seem to be relatively durable. The car will still fall apart around the engine. There just isn't any way around that, because it is a Neon. Even my SRT-4 friends, who are hardcore turbo dodge guys, don't argue with that.
3) Everybody who talks about romping on them all the time has like 20-30K max on them. I want to see what shape they are in after being romped on for 150-200K. I am not saying that they will fall apart, but based on the long term durability of all Chrysler products I have encountered (besides the CUMMINS RAM), they aren't going to make it that far.
4) I think I heard somewhere that the Stage 3 Mopar upgrade will void your standard warranty. You may want to double check on that before you install it. Perhaps they have one that you can buy.
5) The suspension design only allows for skinny tires, and is a basic economy car strut setup. Especially on the '03s with no LSD, traction will be a severe issue.
6) Having said that, they have a lot of displacement AND boost so they are very easily a lot of fun.
7) Other than the stock "stance" they actually look pretty cool. Get the overly wedgy stance taken care of with a good set of springs, and it will look much better. The suspension won't allow you to lower it more than about an inch without a lot of money, so be careful. Get rid of the wing and get a set of black wheels with a polished lip, and it will look sweet.
8) Wax it every three months, and maybe the paint will last longer.

I work with a kid that has a silver SRT-4 and he has the stage 1 plus more mods that he's done himself and he's putting out stage 2-like numbers. I've helped him work on it a bit and he's had it on a lift and I took a good look.
This is my view on it, as I've seen it in person (under car as well) and driven it as well. The car engine/drivetrain performance wise is nice. It's a 2.4L turbo 4-cylinder FWD and it comes stock with LSD. You can tell they totally appealed to the sport compact market with their powertrain. However, the suspension is thru and thru a Neon...no if's, and's or but's about it. For the deal you get though, you can later invest in suspension parts to make it an all-around performance car. This thing rips thru the gears and he has the BF Goodrich Traction T/A KDWs and it's spin them easy 1-2 gears...so I'd getter stickier tires too. Back to suspension, it's way too high for a car of that performance and needs lowering badly. Also, for having the power and LSD, it has NO what Honda refers to as "radius rods" that hold the lower control arms in place.
This friend of mine with the silver one, had a friend of his come after-hours with a red one that has stage 2 and other mods (faster). Anyhow, this "red" guy likes to drag alot and because of this lack of lower control arm support, when he takes off his wheels toe outwards on hard launches. He was looking for something to fix this and at the time they didn't have anything on the market. I told them to custom make their own and sell it, but that's a different story.
Anyhow, that's my take on it. IMO Daimler-Chrysler accomplished what they sent out to do in the sport compact market and with a dang good price. Everyone mods their suspension anyhow, so leave it to the customer (why offer a decent stock setup...keep it Neon for lower costs). They spent the money where it counted to attract the customers. Plus they threw in a better than normal sound system with sub-woofer, etc all standard. Not to mention they offer three stages of upgrades.
Stage 1 and 2 use the existing turbo with other mods.
Stage 3 actually upgrades the turbo itself and other mods, but it's literally plug & play I've heard. It comes with everything you need, including an upgrade to the engine computer.
They make it really easy. Coming from my friend who's on a SRT4 forum, etc. It seems by his stories that most people go with the factory upgrades because it comes with everything you need and it set at a good price it seems.Last edited by HondaFan81; 12-28-2005, 12:43 PM.

yeah the stage 3 will void the warranty... But just swap back in the old parts and your good to go. I agree with the car not being up to par as far as brakes and suspension although they do have the acr SRT-4 which came with upgraded brakes as well as smaller 16 in rims... Handles like a dream.Oil leak? What oil leak? That's just sweat from all that horsepower!
