6th generation Accord automatic transmission problems

Are the auto tranny problems for the 6th generation Accords only limited to the ones made in US and not the ones made in Japan? Just wondering if its best to get the 5speed in the future although I prefer the luxary of an automatic.

6th gen v6 never came in 5 speed...only auto....the other alternative is getting the cls 6 speed swap or the auto dr evil tranny for the 6th gen

my buddy has a 98 LX auto that has major tranny problems. he says there was a factory recall, but he had just missed it.

this is relavant to the CL that i drive (97-99) the 3.0's are total shit man. luckily i drive 2.2 CL but the 3.0's have to change tranny's just about every 75k miles. definately a recall. anyway they are the same motor that they put in the 98-02 accords. They made very few 6spd manuals for that car and if you can find the tranny good luck because it would probably be like 1500 just for the tranny. as for the cl's they never made a manual in a v6 until they switched to the 3.2's which are awesome.

Yeah the 6th gen auto trannies suck....regaurdless of engine or country of origin....they all are crap. The worst was the 00-01 Accords, these years have a 7 year 100K mile trans warranty. However, just about ever single 98-02 with under 100K I've ever worked on has gone warranty. So which engine do you have? What is the trans doing? How many miles are on it?

yeah, that's the reason I got rid of my TL....what an awesome car, if they could've just had a decent tranny I'd probably still have it....

if money was no object, i'd definitely find an 03 TLS and swap a CLS 6spd in it and keep it forever....

oh yeah, btw just so you guys know, the CLS only had a 6spd offered in 03. but it's the same tranny they are offering in the 7th gen aV6 coupes...

I am thinking about my next car and love the 6th generation Accord, but tranny problems seem unavoidable. Honda Prelude or Acura Integra will most likely be it. How about a 98 Accord 5 speed?

No not at all, go ahead and get one if you like. The problem with these trannys is the carrier bearings in some tannys were not manufactured to Honda specs. This caused theses bearings to fail prematurely and the metal particles from this would float around and clog up the solenoids causing shifting problems. So like I already stated, there is a 100K mile trans warranty, and if the trans goes bad, Honda replaces it with a new reman "updated" trans. BTW, these problems usually occur well under 100K anyway, so you should be fine if it does go bad.

allright, thanks for the info. I wont be getting one with over 100k anyways. Probably between 50-70k.

wait i thought they only had problems with 98-2000 2.2 models and they fixed the tranny problems on the 2000 2001 2002 etc.

Nope, it was the 00/01 models that had all the problems. That is why every 00 and 01 Accord, Odyssey, and Prelude has a 7 year/100K automatic transmission warranty.
