Breaking news - the all-new, third generation 2016 Honda Pilot has made its appearance on the web on the eve of the 2015 Chicago Auto Show.

These official photos, which come courtesy of Edmunds, reveal Honda's new, more Acura-like styling direction for their mid-size crossover that looks less utilitarian and more modern and upmarket - both inside and out, than the outgoing Pilot.

One feature that remains from the previous model is the new Pilot's ability to chauffeur up to eight passengers in three rows of seats.

According to Honda, "the new Pilot represents a dramatic shift in design, while showcasing new standout technologies, versatility, and dynamics currently unavailable in the mainstream SUV segment".

For more details we'll likely have to wait for Honda's press conference in Chicago tomorrow morning.

It's worth noting that the 2016 Pilot likely previews the styling of the upcoming 2016 Ridgeline pickup truck as well.

2016 Honda Pilot Looks Better with Genuine Accessories

The all-new 2016 Honda Pilot is offered with an optional accessory package that manages to make the seven-seat SUV look a little sharper.

Honda has released some photos of the 2016 Pilot equipped with the official accessories which are aimed at improving the exterior appearance. The package includes 20-inch black painted alloy wheels, roof rails with crossbars, running boards with lights and illuminated door sill trim.

There are also some accessories offered in chrome, such as the door mirror cover, tailgate trim and front bumper trim. Honda didn’t say anything about interior upgrades.

The 2016 Honda Pilot has debuted at the Chicago Auto Show this year powered by the latest version of the company’s 3.5-liter V6 engine. Base models get a 6-speed automatic, while more expensive ones earn a 9-speed automatic – both replacing the previous 5-speed unit. The new-generation model is also approximately 300 pounds (136 kg) lighter than its predecessor.

2016 Honda Pilot Gains New Features, Loses About 300 Pounds

The third-generation, 2016 Honda Pilot catches up with the key players in the three-row midsize crossover class, of which it is a founding member.

High on the list of improvements to the new Pilot, unveiled Thursday at the Chicago Auto Show, is to the style of Honda's mainstream SUV. The company emphasizes words such as "modern," "sleek" and "premium," making sure you forget all about the blocky old model. It clearly takes inspiration from the Honda CR-V and HR-V from the front, to good effect. Newly available LED projector lights and daytime running lights class things up, too.

The real story with the Pilot has always come from inside, though, where there are a number of changes to keep it competitive with what rivals such as the Toyota Highlander and Ford Explorer offer. Uplevel Pilot models will feature second-row captains chairs, which admittedly reduce total capacity from 8 people to 7.

Those models will also benefit from niceties never before found in a Pilot, such as a panoramic moonroof (more of a two sunroof deal like you used to get on a Toyota Previa), ventilated front seats, heated second-row seats and a heated steering wheel. Keen observers might notice pieces taken from Acura products, like a TLX-ish push-button gear selector and the second-row seat-slide system from the MDX. There are five USB ports, along with a 115-volt outlet and an HDMI port, so clearly Honda knows its customers will have every electronic imaginable.

An 8-inch touchscreen powered by Android comes up front, a similar unit to what's already been shown in the newer Civic, CR-V and HR-V models (and earning scorn for lack of physical controls), while a 9-inch rear entertainment system will be available. Safety tech also improves with Honda's first "Road Departure Mitigation" system, along with the now-typical blind-spot monitoring and lane departure prevention features.

Honda put the third-generation Pilot on a diet, shedding roughly 300 pounds over the outgoing model, according to the company. The car will use the latest version of the company's ubiquitous 3.5-liter V6 engine, now badged Earth Dreams, with base cars getting a 6-speed automatic and more expensive models earning a 9-speed automatic – both replacing the previous 5-speed unit.

The Pilot will also boast from start-stop technology. The 2016 Pilot is expected to go on sale this summer and become a staple in suburban housing communities shortly after.

          Intelligent Traction Management system available

Honda has announced the 2016 Pilot's 3.5-liter V6 engine is capable of developing 280 bhp (208 kW).

Unveiled back in February at the Chicago Auto Show, the third generation Honda Pilot will be available with a 3.5-liter V6 engine which now we have learned will produce 280 bhp (208 kW) at 6,000 rpm and 262 lb-ft (355 Nm) of torque at 4,700 rpm. The direct-injected i-VTEC engine benefits from cylinder deactivation technology and can be paired to six- and nine-speed automatic transmissions, with the latter featuring shift-by-wire with paddle shifters.

The 2016 Honda Pilot also benefits from an Intelligent Traction Management System controllable via a button from where the driver will be able to switch between various operating modes. AWD-equipped models come with Normal, Mud, Sand and Snow modes while FWD versions have Normal and Snow.

Depending on selected mode, the system will adjust the transmission shift map, drive-by wire map, Vehicle Stability Assist and torque distribution for the AWD variants.

Almost 300 lbs (136 kg) lighter than its predecessor, the third-gen Pilot mid-size SUV is programmed to go on sale this summer.
