Mazda MX-5 GT concept headed into production as an aftermarket conversion - report

Will produce 203 bhp (151 kW)

Mazda introduced the MX-5 GT concept at the 2012 Goodwood Festival of Speed and now it's going into production thanks to the company's racing partner Jota.

Set to be offered as an aftermarket conversion, the MX-5 GT will feature a sport-tuned suspension and revised styling that closely matches the concept. The car's 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine will also be outfitted with an optimized ECU and a sports exhaust system. Thanks to these modifications it will produce 203 bhp (151 kW).

Auto Express says the MX-5 GT will cost less than £30,000 ($48,440 / €35,450) and come with a three-year warranty.

Mazda MX-5 GT gets green light

The more powerful Mazda MX-5 GT is now available through its official racing partner, Jota

The Mazda MX-5 GT was such a hit when it was shown in concept form at last year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed that you can now buy one for yourself. It will be sold not as an official Mazda UK product, but Jota – the team that prepares Mazda’s racing cars – will upgrade the standard Mazda MX-5 for you, boosting power to 203bhp.

Homologating the MX-5 GT for the road would take too long, so buyers can only buy the kit as a modification after registering their standard roadster. Jota has tweaked the ECU and fitted a sports exhaust so power from the 2.0-litre engine increases from 157bhp in the regular MX-5. It’s also uprated the suspension, and modified the styling to resemble the Goodwood car.

The MX-5 GT has a three-year warranty, and while the price hasn’t been finalised, we were told it’ll be less than £30,000.

The standard Mazda MX-5 costs from £18,495, and is available with either a normal fabric roof or a folding metal one. Climate control comes as standard throughout the range, and go for the Sport Tech Nav trim and you also get a TomTom sat-nav with a touchscreen display.

The 1.8-litre and 2.0-litre engines in the standard Mazda MX-5 produce 124bhp and 157bhp respectively, and while the larger engine gets a six-speed gearbox, the 1.8-litre unti gets a five-speed 'box instead. You can also spec an automatic gearbox with paddles on the steering wheel.

Mazda has also recently launched two high-spec versions of its CX-5 SUV. The SE-L Lux will cost £24,495 while the SE-L Lux Nav will be £25,195. Both wil get a 148bhp 2.2-litre diesel as well as a powered sunroof, leather and heated front seats. The SE-L Lux Nav also gets sat-nav.

Mazda MX-5 GT Races Towards Production

Detractors of Mazda's evergreen MX-5 sports car often come back to one point: It just doesn't have enough power.

Fans of the car would disagree, but we're sure nobody will complain at the news, via Auto Express, that Mazda's MX-5 GT concept is set for production. The car, developed by race engineers JOTA in the U.K., enjoyed a popular reception during this summer's Goodwood Festival of Speed, prompting Mazda to announce the package as an upgrade.

The bright orange roadster is a real old-school performance car. Tuning for the concept was largely handled via traditional means--the 2.0-liter four-cylinder granted hotter exhaust cams and a freer-flowing exhaust system. A reprogrammed ECU was also part of the deal, raising power from 157 horsepower in the standard car to a Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S-eclipsing 203 horses. The red line has also climbed to a shade under 8,000 rpm.

Styling and suspension upgrades boost the car's visual potential and its corner-carving abilities. It'll carve our a hole in your wallet too though--in the U.K., where the JOTA-developed car is likely to remain, the GT will likely cost $16,000 more than the standard car at a shade under $48,000.

Still, it answers those power criticisms, and may just be the car to placate fans waiting for the next-generation of MX-5 expected by 2015

Mazda MX-5 GT Gets Green Light as Kit

The Mazda MX-5 GT first seen during the Goodwood Festival of Speed will be available for purchase.

Mazda’s roadster already commands a cult following of drivers who appreciate its low cost, high fun value proposition. The tuned version won’t be offered through Mazda, but rather as a kit to be fitted after production by Jota Sport. The company estimates that including the cost of the car, customers will spend about £30,000, which converts to roughly $48,000 in the U.S.

For that price, the car gets a revised suspension, sports exhaust and an ECU tweak that increase horsepower from the U.K. spec 2.0-liter four cylinder from 157 hp to 203.

It isn’t clear if the kit will be offered in the U.S. or what the cost would be, although there’s a good chance that it would be less expensive here than there

Jota has officially unveiled their Mazda MX-5 GT.

This enables the model to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 6.4 seconds and hit a limited top speed of 140 mph (225 km/h).

The car has also been equipped with a brilliant black roof, a carbon fiber rear diffuser and anthracite alloy wheels. There's also Bilstein dampers and leather Recaro seats. Options include a carbon fiber front splitter, a carbon fiber rear spoiler and an Öhlins suspension.
