Rumors have been spreading that Toyota has killed off all hopes of a convertible variant for its 86 model, but it appears those may be false.
According to the Japanese automaker’s project manager for the 86, the convertible has not been axed. In fact, a new drop-top concept will debut at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show.
At the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, Toyota previewed a convertible variant for its popular sports car with the FT-86 Open Concept. At the time, it was pretty much everything you’d expect a Scion FR-S convertible to be, though the automaker stated at the time that only 13 pounds were added to the car in order to make it a convertible.
It would be hard to believe that Toyota wouldn’t be making a convertible variant for its sports car, considering the automaker has previously stated that the chassis was designed to be a convertible from the start.
