New Toyota GT86 Convertible Concept Heading to Tokyo Motor Show

Rumors have been spreading that Toyota has killed off all hopes of a convertible variant for its 86 model, but it appears those may be false.

According to the Japanese automaker’s project manager for the 86, the convertible has not been axed. In fact, a new drop-top concept will debut at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show.

At the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, Toyota previewed a convertible variant for its popular sports car with the FT-86 Open Concept. At the time, it was pretty much everything you’d expect a Scion FR-S convertible to be, though the automaker stated at the time that only 13 pounds were added to the car in order to make it a convertible.

It would be hard to believe that Toyota wouldn’t be making a convertible variant for its sports car, considering the automaker has previously stated that the chassis was designed to be a convertible from the start.

Everything is ruined. Need a remake of the old ea86, do like mustang, Challenger and charger are doing. Make it have the old school boxy look with new modifications. Just my opinion.
I wake up in the morning and piss excellence!

The mustang is the only one that even looks good. I feel the challenger and camaro are way too bulky for no reason and they can't handle corners for crap, unless you're just boss at drifting.

IMO, we will never see a "retro" designed vehicle from any japanese maker. it would be cool to see a few cars "retro'd out" but this isnt japanese styling (again my opinion). even though i just posted nissan doing a "retro" 240z but i dont think it'll be like the way ford, dodge, chevy did.

i agree on your opinion of the camaro and challenger being too bulky. all three cars suprisingly handle pretty well.

Ford is doing well transitioning the retro look through its different generations. Chevy, IDK what the hell they are thinking. the new camaro transition isnt going well, IMO. the front end looks ok and the rear looks like a rip off of the last gen prelude. its still bulky as hell and still a boat anchor. Dodge's retro approch was pretty good IMO, but since its off of the Charger/300 is the heaviest from the three. Dodge should take advantage of the next gen to loose some weight and make it less bulky.

Agreed. Had they produced this in targa form, I'd be down at the Scion dealer tomorrow. Literally, even though it needs a solid 50 more HP.
