    Factory Five Racing 818

    http://www.factoryfive.com/kits/project-818/

It's still in the design stages, and nothing is set in stone yet... but a $10,000 kit that requires about $5000 in donor parts, resulting in an 1800lb MR sportscar with a Subaru engine powering it... I want one!
The images above are designs by Nouphone Bansasi, the winner of their design contest. I don't know how much the final product will look like that.

I've seen the prototype chasis in the flesh. The proportions just "look" right, if there's any better way to describe it. The shame is that it has to use a WRX 5MT and cannot accept the STi 6MT.

After visiting Factory Five's facilities and seeing their work firsthand (The GT-M, 33 Roadster and a bunch of their Cobra replicas) I have no doubt this will be a top notch car.

A cosmetically rough bugeye WRX is creeping ever closer to the $5,000 mark. There are plenty of things you'll be able to resell of the original car to make back a solid chunk of the price of a new car.

Yeah, I found a fully functional 04 WRX for $6000 not too far from me. If one that's driveable, being sold by a dealership, is that price... a stuffed one should be far less! There are already companies that are offering "packages" that are comprised of all the necessary parts. I believe they're asking $5000 flat for them. So essentially, you pay $5000 for all the parts and forgo the hassle of tearing apart a donor car... though selling the unnecessary parts from that donor car will certainly help pad the cost!

Depending on where I stand financially, I may skip the 33 Hot Rod and go for the 818. I REALLY want one of their kits, and the price for this one is simply too good to pass up.
This thing will have more power potential and less weight than a Lotus Elise. It may not be engineered to Lotus-quality specs, but for my intentions, I bet I would never see the limits of this kit car.
My only concern is that as of now, it seems to be topless... only. If they put a roof on it, even a cloth roof, that will make it drivable in all weather... I'm as good as sold.

I don't see the $10,000 mark being hit. The GTM started out cheaper than it is now and it was pretty rough as a kit. They did a lot to refine it for the second run of bodies that they're selling now and the price went up a bit. I know there's not much to this one, but there really isn't much to the GTM either. I'd say this ends up around $13,000.
My Members' Ride Thread - It's a marathon build, not a sprint. But keep me honest on the update frequency!

Even at $13,000, I imagine it'd be a pretty great little car.

I really wanted the 33 Hot Rod, but that's $20,000 plus donor parts. A $30,000 car when all is said and done. Of course, at $30,000, it's a pretty complete car. Retro styling with a modern suspension...

I think the goal of the 818 is not only the performance, but to provide a kit that can be completed for roughly $15,000. The final price is a BIG part of this car. If they can hit that mark, even with just a marginal profit, I think they'll see HUGE sales. The 818 section of their forums is already the busiest section, and the kit hasn't even been released yet!
If I were their marketing mastermind, I'd suggest keeping to the $10,000 kit price, that can be used to create a complete car. Then offer a MASSIVE amount of additional parts... body parts, interior upgrades, suspension upgrades, etc... and make the profit there. I mean, nobody else is going to be offering parts for a kit car, right?

They're basically offering a car with the performance of a Lotus Elise/Exige for the price of the Miata.

My friend's already planning on turning his WRX into an 818 once it's basically worn out.

HALF the price of a Miata!

And who, Chris? Yeah, his WRX has taken a hell of a beating...

I'm eagerly awaiting the final design. If I can get a roof on it, I think I'll change my plans. I'm hoping to buy the CTS-V and build a garage (refinancing the house to do so), and then I'll have what's necessary to build such a beast. Technically, I could have one with no roof if I have a garage... but I don't know if I'd do that. I don't want my garage to be nothing more than permanent storage for my kit car...
