Best small, cheap RWD cars (no V8s)

You've missed out on a section of the market that fits the 4 cylinder, RWD, under $3000 criteria (but not necessarily small; then again the Starion is no featherweight):

and the best part: at total sleeper. Nobody would expect it at the stoplight, especially Ricer Rick in his APC-laden Civic. I've seen some 740s throwing out over 385 whp on a dyno. Whee!

Rarest one of all...

Hmm I was reading the posts and then this struck me, although I've only seen it in Gran Turismo 2 (thank you Polphony Digital ) this has got to be the rarest sports car...so rare that I don't even think anyone remembered to even mention it.

Developed and built jointly by Yamaha Motor and Toyota Motor Corporation, the TOYOTA 2000GT made its debut in the 1965 Tokyo Motor Show as a showcase of Japan's first high-performance sportscar.

Built on a sturdy X-backbone frame, the 2000GT's 4-wheel independent suspension had double-wishbones front and back.

The engine, a 1988cc DOHC 6-cylinder with 3 Solex carburetors, produced 150 horsepower. This could propel the car to a top speed of over 220km/h. Other features included a close-ratio 5-speed transmission, limited slip differential, and Japan's first 4-wheel disc brakes with vacuum booster.

Today these cars are extremely rare (note build nuber above) and would make a great investment if you could find one (and afford one).

I saw a 740 on the highway once... driven by some Asian guy about my age. The car looked as if you selected "Race Modification" in Gran Turismo 2 It had all the decals/paint sponsors all over it... It actually looked pretty hot!

Are they RWD though? I never thought to look into that!

My only beef with Volvos is that they are so damn heavy. Safe, but heavy! A 385whp turbo brick would probably still run slower than 12.5... And get beat by a Civic with 100 less hp. You're right about the sleeper though!


And I love the 2000GT! That thing opened a can of whupass on me in GT2!

Right about the Volvos flying bricks but I never knew those were RWD.

This is off topic, but I just looked into the Volvo s60r... 6 speed close ratio transmission, AWD, 300hp I like! 3700lbs though, without my fat ass in the car... As I said, Volvos are heavy beasts!

You can get a really old BMW 318/325iS for that kinda $$$ I believe, just make sure it's well taken care of. There are still crazy mods available and I think you can do a DOHC VANOS head swap on the 325, then get E36 M3 cams, etc, blah blah...200whp all motor easy if I'm correct.

My first car was a 87 200 sx XE coupe, not the hatch. Wish I had a SE-V6. The 2.0 engine was a turd. Same engine they put in the Stanzas. But the thing handled awesome due to it having the 300zx suspension.

Oh and yes it was a RWD!

I posted this earlier but the datsun 280zx would own all of you! Has to be datsun though. I just like the name better than nissan.

Also the other day I saw this fairly nice 82-89 rx7, and man that thing was sexy. Fast, lightweight, and sexy guages. Probably has the smallest engine of all these cars too, at a whoping 1.3L. But hey, you can't argue with rotary power. Another car too shoot for in the future!

hmm my first car, well actually the car i learned to drive on, was a Bimmer. It's also my daily driver now since my accords awaiting a new motor (shhh top secret)...but
its not your typical BMW...its the wannabe, 318ti hatchback and a fourbanger!

The 940s were the evolution of the 740s. They were the last of the RWD Volvos. Everything was RWD with Volvo until the advent of the 850. Sure, they're not featherweights, but a 940 Turbo is going to weigh in at just under 3100; our Accords weigh in at roughly 2900 and change. Not a hellvua lot of difference.

Find one on a used car lot somewhere. You'll be pretty suprised.

In fact I'd have picked up a turbo brick, but I went with my 2nd choice since the price and mileage was right on the Protege.
