My mom is kinda going having a mid-life crisis and has decided to buy a C4 vette. This guy is selling a 1990 Red Coupe with 167,000 on the body and 2,000 on the motor (still under GM factor warrenty), Freshy rebuilt tranny, all new belts, new tires, and new interior. He said it runs great no issues and the only reason he's selling it is because his wife. I drove it and took it to a corvette collector and he said its a sound car for the 10k asking price. What do yall think??

I've seen C4s selling for $3000... of course, they didn't have 2,000 mile engines.
I would look into replacement costs for the things that have 167,000 miles on them. Suspension components, brakes, accessories (if they weren't new with the engine), etc... The driveline is an expensive part, but there are plenty of other things to break on a 20 year old car. $10,000 is a lot of money, so unless your mom has some in reserve for unexpected repairs, it might be too much. If the brakes end up needing a major overhaul in 1,000 miles, will she be able to cover that cost?
Is this guy the original owner?

GM is notorious for crappy suspension parts.
Not bad considering the motor and warranty, but i agree with deev; id look into the cost/age/condition of other important parts.

when you sell a car...body mileage counts... "rebuilt engine" mileage means nothing. Do not let that factor in. Think about it like this...if you rebuilt it once at 167k, you will rebuild it again...so to me...that doesn't help resell value much. Obviously it's worth more than a vett with no rebuild...but why did it need the rebuild you must ask...
...unless the rebuild was purely to gain performance and it was upgraded...then it would
But you took it to a guy who is supposed to know these cars and he says it is worth 10k...well don't ask collectors what something is worth...hell JDM freaks here will spend $300 for a spoiler...fail...
But...he says it's worth 10k TO HIM...so...that means it's worth buying...
have you ever heard of kbb.com? I always post that link when folks as "what's this car worth" Best way for you to decide the RANGE you should pay..kbb isn't exact...it's an estimate.
You didn't actually say, so what is the asking price? And...is it a zr1? 10k seems very high to me and I wouldn't pay that much for a car with a rebuilt engine/tranny.
btw...when you look at old cars...to a point mileage doesn't matter either...case in point.
30,000 mile 1992 honda accord...again...with only 30,000...is est. to be worth...3-4k...age matters...not miles.
Now...being a zr1 seems to add about 10k to the price
and also btw...did a kbb comparison...
that vette in excellent shape...about 3k-5900
or if it's a zr1...now you're getting up there...13k-16kLast edited by bcjammerx; 09-13-2009, 11:52 PM.____

Sounds like this vette is overpriced. Your mom might be getting taken for a ride. (no pun intended)"This truck is 100% sh*ts and giggles."

You're not JDM until you have a car built in ohio with tons of bolt ons from ebay.
