Finally decided on the car im getting next year...

a CG. ive wanted one for a while and they look good lightly modded with some nice rims and a drop. even better slammed. not sure on which one im going for tho. V6 or 4 banger. it'll probably turn into my DD. who knows, i may sell the cb(such blasphemy. id never do that. lmao.)


questions:

-should i get a 2dr or a 4dr? ive wanted a 4dr for a while. they look nice.
-they both come with V6 or 4 banger.
-i might supercharge it if its a V6. but if i end up getting a 4dr 4 cylinder then it wont see anything more than a 50 shot.

-do they have any known problems from the factory?
-which year has the least amount of issues stock?

1) The interior materials were only so-so. For instance, the top half of the dash was completely hard plastic. At least on the 7th and 8th gens the areas most likely to be touched are softer, and padded, even though I don't agree with the amount of hard plastic they have. Some of the secondary interior plastics such as that covering the door pillars etc was too easily scratched. The 7th gen has been much better in that regard. The leather was also not so good. It isn't as shitty as everyone makes it sound, but the 7th gen had much higher quality leather, that was also much softer and had better graining. The 8th is better still. The 7th gen leather also seems to be wearing somewhat better as well.

2) I noticed cost cuts in areas like underhood wiring etc, were not impressive. In the engine bay, there were quite a few areas where the wire was not completely loomed and wrapped. If it was loomed, the tape was wrapped just to keep stuff from falling out, or coming apart as opposed to helping seal it as in older Honda wiring. One reason they have so few electrical issues with time is because of the way of wrapping the wires. It makes me skeptical about the 6th gens long term.

3) The doors sounded kind of junky. With newer Honda's I am not completely satisfied, because they sound solid when shut with the windows up, but the glass rattles when the windows are down or cracked. The 2002 just sort of rattled all the time. It wasn't really any worse than other competitors, but it wasn't as consistent in noise as the older Accords, which didn't necessarily sound the most solid, but never made any noises that made stuff sound loose or cheap.

4) The tranny issues were well known by the time we had owned the car for awhile. I was always afraid the tranny was going to go, but in over 70K, we never had a single hiccup. Of course, to avoid premature failure, I replaced the fluid about every 10-12K, or as soon as it changed color or smell. I also only used OEM stuff, which is specifically formulated for wet clutches.

5) There were some general build quality issues. The carpet felt cheaper, and we had a minor door leak under pressure on the rear passenger door. You had to sort of make an effort to get water in there, but it would get in there. The front end of the car was easily chipped and scratched. The 7th gen's paint has held up much better and seems much more lustrous. I also have not seen a lot of fading/peeling 7th gens like I did 6th gens at this age, with the green and blue 6th gens being notorious for bad paint. I think this may have been early in the process of Honda using environmentally friendly paint and processes, but either way, it didn't seem to hold up as well. The fit and finish was nearly peerless though.





All of the 6th gen trannies had the same problem, but the V6's showed up quicker due to the higher torque of the engine.

The whole problem was caused by Honda trying to use the torque converter clutch to cushion shifts. This lead to premature converter clutch wear, which put debris in the system, lowering the line pressure for the other clutches which in turn increased their wear. Since there was no filter or anything, the only way to remove the excess debris was to flush the tranny fluid more regularly, which I did, and hope that it protected the tranny. But how many people are really going to change the tranny fluid twice as much as Honda tells them they need to? Almost none. Oddly, driving the car easily increased the wear, because it increased the ECU's slipping of the converter clutch, which in turn made the tranny wear faster than if it were driven hard/normally. People babying their transmissions didn't help for that reason. Also, for the record, nearly every 4cyl 6th gen I know of has also had the tranny replaced.

As a final note, while the J30 in the 6th gen is nice, it is nothing compared to the newer versions. A 7th gen will walk the shit out of a 6th gen V6.

i know the interior dash and layout looks pretty cheap in these cars. our accords look better imo interior wise. if you have your heart set on a 6th gen then go for it, i'd prefer a 7th gen.

came to the rescue. lol. thanx for the info. i dont much mind about interior. just as long as its not leather. i never did like leather interior at all in any car. especially in hot weather. lol.

i have my eyes set on a '01. is that the 7th gen? or the 6th gen? lol. i think ill stay with accords for my life tho. but the '05+ models arent looking good to me at all. the coupes yeah. but the 4drs eww. i know after this accord tho, ill get a '04 TSX. after that, unless a newer model accord sparks my fancy, ill end up switching to the RSX or the Civic....ugh...lol

now i just have to line up the suspension im gonna get for it. i know its gonna be coilovers with a good strut set up tho. i THINK i have the rims lined up for it. just have to make sure. im not sure if 16s are too small for a 6th gen.

i have a 6th gen sedan also. mine's the 4 cyl, 5 speed.

overall, it's a good car.

here's some of the pro's
- it's comfortable. i like taking it on road trips and it has a good amount of space inside.
- it's easy to work on. it's as easy or easier to work on then my 4th gen.
- it gets pretty good gas milege. the most i ever got out of a tank was 530 (all highway).

some cons:
- it has terrible handling. you really can really tell it's a bigger, heavier car.
- it has a single egr port that gets clogged. this causes a CEL and you have to take the plenteum apart to clean it out.

really, i can't complain to much about it. it's all stock and i keep it that way to save all the money for the 4th gen. later.

a g35 coupe i had a chance to get one before i got laid off it im kinda happy i didnt get it because i would be stuck with a pretty big payment. But the Challenger........wow there nice and there not that bad in price

i was waiting to hear from you. lol. i saw that you had got one for like $800 wasnt it? and all it had was a blown head gasket? think you can find me one for that price? lol.

-and 530miles out of 1 tank? thats really good man. the most ive gotten out of my cb was like 350 or MAYBE 400. i cant remember.

-im not much worried about the handling. lol. i plan on giving it a drop with a rear sway bar to help that out. i cant keep it stock. lol. it'll be my DD anyway.

-ugh....clogged EGR port. that sucks. i take it you had to clean yours out. did you have a hard time doing it?

7th gen would be the 03-07 i believe. hey i like the 6th gen when its on a nice drop. lol how about skip getting the 6th gen and go straight to the TSX!

no, not $800, but $150. also, it didn't have a blown headgasket. the only thing that was wrong with it was a dead battery. i jumped it off and drove it home. it had been sitting in a garage for 6 months. cat had 150k on it. the reason the owners stopped driving it is because it would randomly shut off. that turned out the be the igntion switch, that was under recall. so, i pretty much got the bigger piece of the wishbone.

the egr port wasn't that bad, just had to take the top half off to get to it. didn't even have to replace the gasket. later.

and thats good to know you just had to clean out the port and you didnt have to replace any gaskets. did you have any plans for it? or do you plan to keep it stock? lol.
